Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates who have completed: A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed. OR equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
- A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer Central list)/ PwBD/ Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.
- Only those candidates who have completed their minimum qualifying Examination/degree on or before Academic Session 2023-2024 will be eligible for admission in the Ph.D. programme for the Academic Session 2024-2025.
Admission Process
- The University shall admit Ph.D. students through an all India Entrance Examination and interview jointly.
- UGC NET/UGC-CSIR NET/ GATE/CEED/ICAR/DST Inspire and similar national level tests qualified candidates shall be exempted from the Entrance Examination, but they have to apply online on the prescribed form till the due date along with the fee.
- The question paper of the entrance examination will be of a total of 100 marks. The paper will include two sections:
- Section I will consist of questions based on Research Methodology (50 marks).
- Section II will be subject-specific based on the Post-Graduate syllabus/syllabus passed in BoS and AC of the concerned/allied subjects (50 marks).
- The question paper will contain 100 objective type multiple choice questions (50 in each section); and the duration of the examination is two (02) hours.
- There will be no negative marking for a wrong answer in the question paper.
- Please visit the University website www.hnbgu.ac.in for the Entrance Examination syllabus for different subjects and a common syllabus of Research Methodology for the Entrance Examination.
- Qualifying cut-off marks in the Entrance Examination will be 50% for General and 45% for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer Central list)/EWS, PwBD categories.
- All the qualified candidates in the Entrance Examination will be called for an interview along with the candidates exempted from the entrance examination.
- An interview will be organized by the concerned department of the University in which the candidates will be required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted Board of Studies.
- The interview shall also consider the following aspects:
- The candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research.
- The research work can be suitably undertaken at the Institution/College.
- The proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.
Assessment Index
For the exempted category:
Students who qualify for fellowship/scholarship in UGC NET/UGC-CSIR NET/ GATE/CEED/ICAR/DST Inspire and similar national level tests.
- Academic career: Distribution of 70 marks
- 30% of the percentage of marks obtained in UG
- 40% of the percentage of marks obtained in PG
- Marks obtained in the interview of 30 marks
For students who qualify the NET under categories 2 and 3:

- 70% weightage will be given for NET 2024 test scores and 30% weightage for the interview for admission to Ph.D. programmes.
- The formula for calculation of 70% weightages is as under: (Secured score in NET 2024/Maximum score in NET 2024) x 0.70
For the candidates who qualify the University Entrance Examination:
- 70% of the marks obtained in the entrance Examination
- Marks obtained in the interview out of 30 marks
