PhD Admission for Spring Session (2026-27) of Gauhati Uiversity for different disciplines is open. Interested candidates will be able to apply in three (3) categories, viz., JRF & other Fellowship holders, international candidates and Professional/Non- academics.

Categories of Applicants

  1. JRF & Other fellowship holders (i.e. all those who have qualified in a National Level eligibility test). Recipients of CSIR/UGC-JRF, ICMR-JRF, DBT-JRF, GATE (with valid score) and any National Level Fellowship/ Scholarship (awarded for the PhD programme by a National Agency, such as INSPIRE Fellowship, Ministry of Education, etc.) are eligible to apply. Scholars who are working in a project but have not qualified in any of these awards are not eligible for this category.
  2. International Applicants
  3. Professional/Non-academics who have the required qualifications, and established scholarly interests. Such applicants may seek admission in their PG disciplines or in any of the interdisciplinary Departments and Centres of the University. Note: Applicants need to go through the Gauhati University Ph.D. Regulations, 2025.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Any person having a Postgraduate Degree or its equivalent, of GU or any other UGCrecognized university/institute with not less than 55 (fifty-five) percent of marks or equivalent grade in the concerned subject may apply for admission to the Ph.D. programme in the subject in which the candidate has the Master’s Degree or in a subject recognized by the respective department as its allied subject which will not be vice-a-versa for consideration by respective Departmental Research Committee (DRC) or Faculty Research Committee (FRC).The minimum marks for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates or a differently-abled candidate (with equal to or more than 40% disability) is 50% or equivalent grade. A relaxation in respect of eligibility criteria in terms of marks shall be applied as per applicable rules and regulations of Govt. of Assam. OR
  • A candidate may seek admission to the Ph.D. programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (noncreamy layer)/ Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission or and/or as per rules of Govt. of Assam from time to time.
  • NOTE: Candidates with valid GATE score need to apply offline in the prescribed forms to be collected from Office of the Academic Registrar.
  • In case of any special eligibility conditions or deviations from the above generic eligibility conditions, concerned DRC may submit the proposal to the Academic Registrar for consideration and necessary approval from the Vice Chancellor.
  • In case of Medical Sciences, the rules of Medical Council of India/Indian Nursing Council/Rehabilitation Council of India/ recommendation of Faculty of Medicine for Clinical Courses shall be followed (where necessary).

For international applicants:

Before an international applicant can be considered for admission into the PhD programme, the following eligibility conditions MUST be fulfilled:

  • Have passed Masters level examination from a University/Institution recognised by the UGC. i.e. have passed a course which is equivalent to the two-year Masters Programme at GU (and other Indian universities) which is usually pursued after twelve (12) years of school and three (3) years of undergraduate course, completing a total of 15 years of education. That is, an international applicant must have had 17 years of formal education before becoming eligible for application to the PhD Programme.
  • Have secured at least 55% or equivalent grade in your Masters’ or equivalent examination.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English either through standardized tests such as TOEFL, IELTS etc., or through a proven record of receiving education in the English language over a considerable length of time.
  • While considering international applications, the DRC (or FRC) of the concerned department will take into consideration the merit of the research proposal, reference letters, and scores of standardized tests such as GRE.

Admission Process

Admission into the spring session of the PhD Programme of Gauhati University for the academic session 2026-2027 (January 2026) is a two-tier process.

  1. The Central Application Process(CAP)
  2. Counselling

Completing the CAP DOES NOT guarantee admission into the PhD Programme. Selection will be based on Counselling in the concerned department and will be on the basis of available seats.

An International student should visit IRW (the International Relations Wing) for facilitation of the process of application.

Application Process

  • All applicants MUST go through the Central Application Process (CAP) (in the SAMARTH portal: URL:https://gauhatiadmission.samarth.edu.in/index.php) and complete the process of filling up the form and pay the application fee.
  • Without the remittance of this fee, the application shall not be considered. The fee should be paid through online payment gateway only.

Application Fee

  • Applicant fee is Rs.1500.00 ( One thousand Five Hundred) only per subject and the bank transaction fee.
