Eligibility Criteria
- Any person having a Postgraduate degree of GU or from any recognised university or institute in a subject in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Technology and Engineering or other professional subjects of GU with not less than 55 (fifty five) percent of marks or equivalent grade in the concerned subject may apply for admission into the PhD programmes in the concerned subject in which the candidate has the Master’s Degree or in an allied subject. The minimum marks for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates or a differently-abled candidate (with equal to or more than 40% disability) is 50% or equivalent grade.
- Students who have appeared or are appearing in their postgraduate final examinations may also apply for admission into the PhD Programmes. However, such candidates will be required to furnish their results before the final selection list of successful applicants is prepared by the concerned department.
- An applicant who is in a service (either permanent or temporary or part-time) should have a “No Objection Certificate” from the employer before admission can be allowed.
Admission Process
- Admission into the autumn session of the PhD Programme of Gauhati University for the academic session 2025-2026 (August, 2025 to July, 2026) is a three tier process.
- The Central Application Process(CAP).
- GURET 2025 (100 Marks)
- Counselling: Selection at the Department Level, following qualification at GURET,2025
- Completing the CAP DOES NOT guarantee admission into the PhD Programme.
- All applicants, (if you are an International student, please visit IRW (the International Relations Wings), MUST go through the CAP, irrespective of any fellowship they might have either through any scheme or any research project (see below for exemptions). The CAP will be facilitated through this website with a dedicated SAMRTH Portal.
GURET-2025
GURET (GU Research Eligibility Test) is the first screening test after the Central Application Process (CAP) for admission into the PhD Programmes of GU, unless an applicant qualifies for an exemption.
Structure, Timing & Marking
- The question paper will contain 100 Multiple Choice Questions. For every right answer, 1 Mark will be awarded and for every wrong answer 0.25 marks will be deducted. There will no marking for un-attempted questions.
- The syllabus for the GURET 2025 will be that of the concerned Master’s subject. The syllabi for all master’s courses can be found in the University Website.
After GURET 2025
- The University will publish a merit list for each subject (in this website only) based on the performance of the student in the GURET 2025.
- The merit list will be considered by each department for counselling.
- The final list of selected candidates will be prepared by concerned Department Research Committee (DRC) and uploaded in the website of the Office of the Academic Registrar, GU for online admission of the candidates.
Other Details of GURET-2025
Merit list will be prepared only on the basis of marks obtained in GURET-2025. In case of a tie. i.e. when two or more candidates obtain equal marks, inter-se merit of such candidates shall be decided as follows:
- Resolution by finding the ratio of positive marks and negative marks. Candidate having higher absolute value of the ratio will be given better rank.
- Resolution by number of unanswered questions. Candidate with less number of unanswered questions will be given better rank.
- If the resolution is not possible after this criterion, candidates with higher age will be given better rank.
Application Process
- All applicants MUST go through the Central Application Process (CAP) [in the SAMARTH portal: URL:Https://gauhatiadmission.samarth.edu/in/2025/index.php] complete the process of filling up the form and pay the application fee.
- Without the remittance of this application fee, the application is incomplete and she/he will not be able appear in the counselling process. The fee should be paid through online payment gateway only.

Application Fee
- Applicant fee is Rs.1500.00 ( One thousand Five Hundred) only per subject and the bank transaction fee.
- For appearing 2 (two) subjects, the application fee will be Rs.2500.00+ Bank Transaction Charge.
