Aliah University Kolkata PhD Admission 2025-2026

Online applications are invited in the prescribed format from eligible candidates (Indian nationals only) for Admission to the Ph.D. Programme for the Academic Session 2025-2026 in various departments of Aliah University, Kolkata.

Eligibility Criteria

• A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory/regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed. OR equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution. A relaxation of 5% marks (55% to 50%) or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to Differently-Abled candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time. OR
• Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks (75% to 70%) or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to Differently-Abled candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
• Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. A relaxation of 5% marks (55% to 50%) or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to Differently-Abled candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.

Selection Process

The University will admit applicants to the Ph.D. programme by using the following methods:

• Aliah University may admit PhD students who have qualified in UGC-NET / UGC-CSIR-NET / WBSET / GATE or other similar national-level tests (accredited by government agencies) based on an interview. And/or
• Aliah University may admit students through an entrance test, i.e., Aliah University Research Eligibility Test (AURET) for the subject Islamic Theology only. The AURET syllabus shall consist of 50% research methodology and 50% subject-specific content.
  • Students securing 50% marks in the AURET will be eligible to be called for the interview.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks will be allowed in the AURET for the candidates belonging to the Differently-Abled category, as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.

Mode of selection and weightage

All eligible applicants must appear for an INTERVIEW before a panel comprising Departmental Research Committee (DRC) members and other experts appointed by the university. The applicants are required to discuss their research interest/area as per the field of specialization/research areas available in the concerned department, and will be objectively assessed and awarded marks, giving weightage as follows:

• Block A: Candidates with Valid Test Score/JRF 
  • Criteria 1 (JRF): Candidates who are awarded JRF with a valid test score after qualifying the national level tests (accredited by government agencies), such as UGC-NET / UGC-CSIR-NET / ICMR / DBT / ASRB-NET / JEST / NBHM / BET .
  • Criteria 2 (Valid Score): Candidates qualified in any national level tests mentioned in item A1 above / GATE / WB-SET / other similar national level tests (accredited by government agencies) with a valid test score.
  • Mode of Selection & Weightage:
    • Valid Test Score: 70% of the valid percentile test score
    • Viva: 30%
    • Total: 100
• Block B: Candidates without Valid Percentile Score / M.Phil. / M.Tech.
  • Criteria: Candidates qualified in any of the test(s) mentioned in Block A above in the past, but whose percentile scores are not available or no longer valid, or completed the M.Phil. / M.Tech / M.E. degree with at least 70% marks in aggregate (or equivalent minimum CGPA 7.5 out of 10.0) .
  • Mode of Selection & Weightage:
    • 10th Standard: 10%
    • 12th Standard: 10%
    • UG: 20%
    • PG: 30%
    • Viva: 30%
    • Total: 100
• Block C: Candidates Qualified in AURET (Islamic Theology only)
  • Criteria: Candidates qualified in AURET (for the subject Islamic Theology only).
  • Mode of Selection & Weightage:
    • AURET Marks: 70%
    • Viva: 30%
    • Total: 100

Application Process

• Log in to the Aliah University website and click on the Admission Portal for the Ph.D. Programme.
• Please read the Eligibility Criteria carefully before starting the application process.
• The hard copy of the application form generated/downloaded at the time of online application must be submitted to the Receiving Section, Ground Floor, Aliah University, Action Area-IIA/27, New Town, Kolkata – 700160, latest by 3rd December 2025 till 5.00 pm.
• Hard copies of all documents should be submitted in a sealed envelope superscribing the Name of the Department applied for and Name of the Programme (PhD). Submission of the hard copy of the application form along with all supporting documents is mandatory.

• Last date of online application submission: 25 November, 2025
• Last date of receiving the hard copies of documents: 3 December, 2025
• Publication of the shortlisted candidates for interview: Second week of January, 2026
• Interview: Between the third week and the last week of January, 2026
• Final result of candidates selected for admission: First week of February, 2026
