UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research (UGC-DAE CSR) is one of the premier research institutions in the country. It has advanced research facilities at Indore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu).

UGC-DAE CSR PhD Program

Students are admitted to a doctoral research program leading to Ph.D. degree in Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences and some inter-disciplinary areas.

The selected students would be registered for Ph.D. with Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), Indore (for Indore Centre), Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU, for Mumbai Centre), University of Calcutta or Jadavpur University (for Kolkata Centre), and University of Madras (for Kalpakkam Centre).

Proposed Area of Research

• Indore Centre
  • Properties of materials at low temperatures and high magnetic fields, thin films / multilayers, microscopy, spectroscopic studies using Synchrotron and laboratory sources, theoretical condensed matter physics, single crystals, non-linear optics etc.
• Kolkata Centre
  • Physics of quantum magnets, multiferroics, topological materials, rareearth intermetallics, and strongly-correlated electron systems using neutron diffraction and laboratory techniques.
• Kalpakkam Centre
  • Nanostructured materials, magnetism in carbon-based materials, wide band gap materials, energy materials and flexible functional thin films.

Eligibility Criteria

For Indore and Kolkata Centres: M.Sc. degree (2023 or after) in Physics with a minimum of 60% overall marks (55% for reserved and women candidates) and must have either

• Valid CSIR-UGC NET (Category 1, 2 & 3) and / or
• JEST (2026 with rank within top 300) and/or
• DST-Inspire Fellowship (Ph.D.) and/or
• GATE (Physics)

For Kalpakkam Centre: M.Sc. degree (2023 or after) in Physics with a minimum of 60% overall marks (55% for reserved and women candidates) and must have either

• Valid CSIR-UGC NET (Category 1, 2 & 3) and / or
• JEST (2026 with rank within top 300) and/or
• DST-Inspire Fellowship (Ph.D.) and/or
• GATE (Physics)

Selection Process

• The selection of the students for the Ph.D. programme will be a two-step process: Screening of the applications, followed by an online interview of the short-listed candidates by the Selection Committees.
• The short-listed candidates shall be called for online interview to be conducted tentatively in the month of June / July 2026.
• The applicant must indicate the preference of CSR Centres option in the application form.
• After the above selection process, the students will be distributed to different centers of the Consortium, depending on the option of the students and vacancies.
