Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates for admission to the PhD programme in general shall have a Master Degree (in the relevant discipline) with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade, or an equivalent degree from a foreign University or Educational Institution accredited by an Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • Candidates for admission to the PhD programme in Data Science shall have BE/B.Tech/Master Degree/LLM degree in any of the relevant subjects (Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related fields) from any University /Institute recognized by UGC with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent CGPA.
  • Candidates who have qualified UGC NET/GATE/JRF fellowship/SET and working professionals (Corporate/ Industry/Academic Persons) having experience of 10 years have to undergo interview. Candidates for admission to the PhD programme in Criminology shall have Post graduate degree in any of the relevant subjects (Criminology, Law, Sociology, Psychology) from any University/Institute recognized by UGC with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent CGPA. Candidates who have qualified UGC NET/GATE/JRF fellowship and working professionals (Corporate/Industry/Academic Persons) having experience of 10 years have to undergo interview.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time..
  • In addition to above requirement, the candidate must have passed UGC NET/GATE/JRF examination in the relevant discipline. During the Course Work each provisionally selected candidate shall be present in the University during all working days till completion of Registration Process on completion of course work.

For Part Time

The candidate applying for part-time PhD program shall obtain a “No Objection Certificate” from the appropriate authority in the organization where the candidate is employed, clearly stating that:

  • The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
  • His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research.
  • If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty or sanction necessary Leave to complete the coursework as prescribed by the University Doctoral Committee.
  • Candidate having more than 10 years professional experience may be admitted as Part-time candidate by the University Doctoral Committee.
  • Part-time Ph.D applicants having professional experience of 10 years need not require UGC NET/GATE/JRF.
  • University Doctoral Committee may relax experience or percentage of marks for otherwise suitable candidates.

Mode of Admission

Admission to Ph.D shall be for those candidates who have cleared UGC NET/GATE/JRF Examination in any category i.e. Category-1, Category-2 and Category-3 as per UGC regulation:

  • For students who qualify in Categories 1, 2 and 3, weightage will be given on their Research Proposal, academic records and interview for admission to Ph.D. programmes.
  • The marks obtained in the NET by the candidates in Categories 2 and 3 will be valid for a period of one year for admission to the PhD programme.
  • Applications for PhD program shall be invited once a year, depending on the vacancies existing in each specialized area.
  • Provisional Registration: Selected candidates shall apply in the prescribed form for provisional registration as doctoral candidates after payment of a stipulated fee to the University.
  • For admission of foreign candidates, the University Doctoral Committee shall prescribe the procedure of such admission.
  • Candidates appearing in the respective Final Examinations are eligible to apply. Admission will be subject to submission of final marksheets with the requisite percentage of marks at the time of admission.

For Part Time Ph.D. Program The candidates having at least 10 (ten) years professional experience relating to Law or application of Law/Law enforcement be required to submit a detailed Research Proposal. Short listed candidate be evaluated on their Research Proposal, academic records and interview by the University Doctoral Committee.

Admission Process

  • Admission of candidates under 2 above shall be on the basis of Research Proposal, academic records and interview.
  •  A candidate who applies for Whole time Research Scholar shall have to submit a Declaration of Non Employment and also a declaration that he/she shall not be engaged anywhere other than the University for a minimum of one year after admission.

Shortlisting of Candidates

All the applicants have to submit a research proposal within 3000 (three thousand) words along with their application form.

The proposal shall include – concept & introduction; statement of problem; literature review national/international; research gap; objectives of the study; research questions; hypothesis (if any); research methodology; research design; research tools; research outcome/significance of the study.

It may be noted that candidates who will not submit the research proposal with the above details along with their application shall automatically be rejected.

Interview Schedule for all eligible candidates will be uploaded on the website as well as sent to the respective emails provided in the application form.

  • All Applications of Ph.D to be made exclusively on the SAMARTH portal of the University, link of which will be available on the University website.
  • In addition to the above, printed hard copies of Application along with Research Proposal, Application processing fees payment receipt of Rs. 2,000.00 (Rupees Two thousand only) & SC/ST Rs. 1,500.00 (Rupees One Thousand Five Hundred Only) (non refundable and nonadjustable) and all supporting documents as uploaded (Application, Research Proposal and certificates) on https://nujsadm.samarth.edu.in and downloaded (Application processing fees payment receipt) on/from the SBI Collect portal should be addressed to the Registrar, West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, 12, LB Block, Sector-III, Salt Lake City, Kolkata-700106 and submitted at the University personally or by post.
