Eligibility Criteria

Candidates seeking admission in PhD programme must necessarily have the following Qualification(s):

• One year/2-semester Master’s degree in Physics / Mathematics / Astronomy / Optics / Photonics / Biophysics after a 4-year/ 8-semester Bachelor’s degree programme with atleast 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade. OR
• Two year/4-semester Master’s degree in Physics / Mathematics / Astronomy / Optics / Photonics / Biophysics after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree programme or equivalent qualifications with atleast 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade. OR
• 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering with 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. OR
• M.Phil in Physics/Mathematics degree with atleast 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. OR
• A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade is allowed to reserved candidates.
• Students who expect to complete their final degree in the academic year 2024-2025 may also apply, provided they can produce their final score card at the time of admission.
• Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates will be as per Institute norms.

Scholarships

• Students will be paid a scholarship of Rs. 37,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs.42,000/- per month thereafter for the next three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
• In addition, they are paid a book grant totaling to Rs.50,000/- in five years.
• Hostel accommodation, if available, or HRA at applicable rate, will be provided.
• The scholarship will be provided for a period of five years.
• RRI encourages and supports participation of students in national and international conferences.

Selection Procedure

The final selection of all the candidates is based on performance in the interviews to be held at RRI tentatively during May – June 2025. Call letters for interviews will be sent around second or third week of April 2025 by e-mail.
