Eligibility Criteria
- A Master’s Degree (2-year/4 semester) with at least 55% marks or its equivalent grade ‘B’ on the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in point scale wherever the grading system is allowed) in the subject.
A Relaxation of 5% of marks (i.e. from 55% to 50%) or an equivalent relaxation of grade is available to SC/ ST/EBC/BC (Non-Creamy Layer)/ Differently-abled categories of candidates as per the State/ University rules. - A candidate seeking admission after a 4-year /8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
- All admissions are subject to Bihar State Reservation Rules, roster positions and subject-wise availability of seats.
- Appearing candidates in Masters Programm are not eligible for Ph.D. Admission Test.
- NET-based category: Only candidates with a valid NET/ CSIR-NET/ GATE or other national exam accepted by UGC are eligible for the NET-based stream. NET score must be supported by the valid score card (NTA or similar competent authority). The University will normalize NET scores and interview scores to a 100-point scale for the purpose of ranking.
- Exemptions from entrance: Purnea University. Purnia conducted PAT clearing candidates within the PAT validity period of three years on the date of advertisement for admission to Ph.D. programme. candidates having M. Phil degree with at least 55% marks, and Permanent Teaching employees having at least two years of experience and Non-teaching staff having at least five years of experience and two research papers published in UGC-listed journals, besides fulfilling all other eligibility will be considered for PAT-exempted category. However, such candidates must appear for the interview/viva-voce.
Admission Process
Stream-A: First 50% of vacant seats-(for NET/CSIR-NET/GATE or BET qualified candidates only).
- For category-1: (candidates qualified for NET-JRF, Assistant Professorship and Admission to Ph.D.) selection will be based on the score obtained by the candidate in a 100 marks interview.
- For category-2: (candidates qualified for Assistant Professorship and Admission to Ph.D.) and For category-3: (candidates qualified for Admission to Ph.D. only) pulled together the selection will be based on NET Score (70% weight) + Interview (30% weight).
- Selection will be based on the composite scheme as follows:- Final Score (out of 100) = (Normalized NET Score × 0.70) + (Marks obtained by the candidate in a 100 marks interview× 0.30).
- NET normalization: The University will convert the NET score into a 100-point normalized scale (Methodology: NET score/3). (Converted to 70% weight).
- Interview: Departmental Research Committee conducted 100 marks interview. (Converted to 30% weight).
- Candidates shall be ranked on final score; admission offers shall be made subject to compliance of reservation policy and available vacancies.
Stream-B: Rest 50% of vacant seats – (for PAT-qualified and PAT-exempted category pulled together)
- Purnea University, Purnia conducted PAT clearing candidates within the PAT validity period of three years on the date of advertisement for admission to Ph.D. programme. 5 marks will be allotted for all PAT-qualified candidates.
- Candidates having M. Phil degree with at least 55% marks.
- Permanent Teaching employees having at least two years of experience and Non-teaching staff having at least five years of experience and two research papers published in UGC-listed journals, besides fulfilling all other eligibility will be considered for PAT-exempted category. However, the score for employment experience will be given only to Permanent Teaching and Non-teaching staff of the Purnea University. Purnia. 10 marks will be given to the teachers and non-teaching employees (having more than three years experience)
- Candidates having M. Phil degree with at least 55% marks, and candidates within the PAT validity period of three years on the date of advertisement for admission to Ph.D. programme will not get any score for employment experience. Candidates having M. Phil degree with at least 55% marks will also not get 5 marks earmarked for PAT.
- Selection will be based on the composite scheme below:-
- Total = 100 marks, composed as:- PG Score (based on PG %) + [PAT score(5 marks) or Employment Experience (10 marks)] + Interview (20 marks).
- Interview (Viva-Voce) -20 mark: The Departmental Research Council will assess research preparedness, subject knowledge, and research aptitude.
Note:
- Number of seat(s) left vacant under Stream-A shall be filled by Stream-B.
- In subjects where there is only one vacant seat, the seat shall be filled preferably through Stream-A upon availability of NET/CSIR-NET/ GATE or BET-qualified eligible candidate.
- In subjects where there is an odd number of vacant seats, the total number of vacant seats will be equally divided into two for admission through Stream-A and Stream-B. The remaining one (1) vacant seat shall be filled preferably through Stream-A upon availability of NET/CSIR-NET/GATE or BET-qualified eligible candidate.
PAT (PhD Admission Test)
- The PAT (PhD Admission Test) will be a written test comprising two papers of 100 marks each.
- Paper-I will consist of multiple-choice questions on qualitative, teaching and research aptitude.
- Paper II will be a subjective type in the subject concerned based on the syllabus of the l’ost Graduate courses of the Purnea University, Purnia.
- The minimum qualifying marks will be as follows:
- General candidates: 50% aggregate marks
- Reserved category candidates: 45% aggregate marks
- The Entrance Examination for PAT 2024 and PAT 2025 shall be conducted on separate dates.

- The duly filled up and completed forms can be submitted online along with supporting documents and requisite fee.
- Incomplete application fee will be summarily rejected.
