Admission Categories

  • Full Time Category
    • Institute Fellowship (including Direct Ph.D. category) or other Fellowships (CSIR UGCJRF/NET/QIP etc.) or sponsored (from industries/organization under bilateral agreement with NIT Puducherry).
    • Project Staff: Research staff of sponsored research projects of National Institute of Technology Puducherry are eligible to apply through proper channel.
    • Self-supported (Indian / Foreign)
      • Indian: This category refers to the persons with exceptionally good academic record to join the doctoral programme in their personal capacity. Limited number (decided from time to time) of candidates can be admitted under this category.
      • Foreign: These candidates are admitted through embassy of the foreign government after the approval from the Ministry of External Affairs and No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Education (or) Study in India(SII) (or) admitted under MoU with NIT Puducherry.
  • Part Time (Internal) Category
    • Regular employees of National Institute of Technology Puducherry are eligible to apply under this category through proper channel.
  • Part Time (External) Category
    • Regular / Full-time teachers/ faculties / employees working in Govt. / Govt. aided / Private Engineering / Technology colleges or Science and Arts Colleges / Universities / Industry / Public sector organization are considered under this category. The candidates shall be officially permitted by their employing organization. A candidate working in an establishment which is equipped with the necessary research and library facilities shall be considered for admission under this category. The candidate should have at least two years of experience in a regular / permanent position at the organization at the time of application. The sponsoring organization / institute must have at least 5 years of its existence (at-least 1 year of existence for start-ups) for patronizing candidates to part-time Ph.D. programme. A candidate applying for admission to the part-time external registration programme shall provide detailed information about the research facilities available to him / her for carrying out research. The candidate should be allowed to undergo course-work mandated for the programme. A no objection cum experience certificate issued by the competent authority of parent organization shall be attached with the application.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Ph.D. in Engineering
    • Candidates with Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree by Research (M.S. By Research) in Engineering/Technology disciplines with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.5/10 in UG or PG for admission under OC/OBC category and 55% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.0 for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
    • Direct Ph.D. admission category- Candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology from CFTI/having valid GATE Score with a minimum of 80% aggregate marks or CGPA of 8.5/10 in UG for admission under OC/OBC category and 75% aggregate marks or CGPA of 8.0 for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
    • Note: For candidates applying under Part Time (External) category, if the candidate is having more than 20 years of relevant industrial experience and having only Bachelor’s in Engineering/Technology with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.5/10 for admission under OC/OBC category and 55% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.0/10 for SC/ST/PwD, he/she is also eligible.
  • Ph.D. degree in Mathematics/ Physics/ Chemistry/ English/ Social Science
    • Candidates having Masters degree with First class in Bachelors or Masters degree in Mathematics/ Physics/ Chemistry/ English/ Social Science in the relevant discipline with minimum 60% aggregate marks (CGPA 6.5/10) in UG or in PG for OC/OBC category and 55% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.0 for SC/ST/PwD candidates. A valid CSIR-UGC NET including lectureship (Assistant Professorship)/GATE score is mandatory for Institute fellowship.

Selection Process

  • Eligible candidates recommended by the Departmental Selection Committee from the received applications will be screened through a written test and interview by the Departmental Selection Committee with the Dean (Academic) or Dean (Academic) nominee as observer.
  • Both Full Time and Part Time candidates will have a common written test.
  • The merit list of the candidates after written test and interview will be submitted to the Chairperson Senate through Dean (Academic) by the Departmental Selection Committee for the approval.

Fellowship

  • Limited number of research fellowships is available to full time research scholars admitted under Institute Fellowship scheme, who are not receiving any financial support/scholarship from State/Central Governments (or) other agencies. They are required to assist the Department in the academic work for at least 8 hours per week as per guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, in addition to satisfying other conditions for the award of the fellowship. The present fellowship emoluments/HTTRA for candidates admitted under Full time Institute fellowship category is Rs.37,000/- per month.
  • However, those who are awarded UGC/CSIR/ NBHM/ NET/JEST may utilize the Doctoral Fellowships once admitted to the Ph.D. programme.

Application Process

  • Candidates applying for Ph.D. programme can apply ONLY through the online application portal https://nitpyadm.samarth.edu.in/.
  • Separate application form is required to be submitted for each category with relevant application fee.
  • In case of the candidate is applying for Part-Time External, Full Time sponsored admission category, the candidate must upload the relevant Form1, and Form2 (NOC and experience certificate in the upload section).
