National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur invites applications for PhD admissions in various departments of the Institute for the 2025-26 Autumn Semester.

Categories of Ph.D. Programme

Full-Time Registration Programme (FRP)

• Institute Sponsored Full-Time Registration Programme (IS-FRP)
  • Research scholars under this category are entitled to a fellowship from the Institute as per Ministry of Education (MoE) norms. Candidates must have qualified GATE/NET or any other equivalent examination recognized by MoE for the award of fellowship. Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS are applicable as per GoI norms only for this category.
• Project Sponsored Full-Time Registration Programme (PS-FRP)
  • Research scholars under this category receive financial support from CSIR/UGC/DST/AICTE/QIP Scheme or any other equivalent fellowship scheme recognized by GoI, or from Institutions/Organizations/Industries under study leave/sponsored project fellows (JRF) of NIT Jamshedpur.
  • Foreign students under this category shall be sponsored by their Government or by the Government of India (ICCR/Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)/Study-in-India, New Delhi or other such organizations/agencies).
• Self-Sponsored Full-Time Registration Programme (SS-FRP)
  • Research scholars under this category financially support themselves during the entire period of their Ph.D.
• Direct Full-Time Registration Programme (DR-FRP)
  • Research scholars under this category get an opportunity to earn a doctorate just after a Four-Year Bachelor’s degree in Humanities/Social Sciences/Management/ Literature/ Engineering/Technology/ Science/Computer application.
  • Research scholars under this category are entitled to a fellowship from the Institute as per Ministry of Education (MoE) norms. Candidates must have qualified GATE/NET or any other equivalent examination recognized by MoE for the award of fellowship. Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS are applicable as per GoI norms only for this category. Research scholars under this category have to complete additional coursework as per the rules.

External Registration Programme (ERP)

• Self-Sponsored External Registration Programme (SS-ERP)
  • Research scholars under this category are regular working/non-working personnel of Institutions/Defense research/R&D/Industries/Regular faculty members. They financially support themselves during the entire period of their Ph.D.
• Direct External Registration Programme (DR-ERP)
  • Research scholars under this category get an opportunity to earn a doctorate just after a Four-Year Bachelor’s degree in Humanities/Social Sciences/Management/Literature/Engineering/Technology/Science/Computer application.
  • Research scholars under this category are regular working/non-working personnel of Institutions/Defense research/R&D/Industries/Regular faculty members. They financially support themselves during the entire period of their Ph.D. Research scholars under this category have to complete additional coursework as per the rules.
• Faculty/Staff/Sponsored Project Fellow of NIT Jamshedpur (FS-ERP)
  • Regular faculty members, regular staff members, and sponsored project fellows of NIT Jamshedpur are eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program in concerned or other Departments.

Note: All Research scholars under the External Registration Programme (ERP) category may avail the provision of Joint Guidance from their parent organization. They shall be required to furnish a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer. Non-working personnel need not produce an NOC.

Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. in Engineering/Sciences

• Master’s Degree: A Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology/ Science/Management/Computer Application with a minimum of 60% marks or an equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5.
• Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree: A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/Science/ Management/ Computer Application with a minimum of 80% marks or an equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 8.5.
• External Registration Programme (ERP) Applicants: Applicants under the External Registration Programme (ERP) with more than 5 years of experience should have a minimum of 60% marks or a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 in their four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Science/Computer Application.

Ph.D. in Humanities, Social Sciences and Management

To be eligible, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

• Master’s Degree: A Master’s Degree in Humanities/Social Sciences/Management/ Literature/Engineering/ Technology/Science/ Computer Application with a minimum of 60% marks or an equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5.
• Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree: A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Humanities/Social Sciences/ Management/ Literature/ Engineering/Technology/Science/ Computer Application with 80% marks or an equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 8.5.
• External Registration Programme (ERP) Applicants: Applicants under the External Registration Programme (ERP) with more than 5 years of experience should have a minimum of 60% marks or a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 in their four-year Bachelor’s degree in Humanities/Social Sciences/Management/ Literature/Engineering/ Technology/Science/Computer Application.

Selection Procedure

Candidates who meet the qualifications outlined in Section 2.4 are eligible for admission to the PhD program. The selection process is based on a written examination and an interview conducted by the Institute/Department/Centre, with the following weightage:

• Written Examination: 50%
• Interview: 30%
• Academic Credentials: 20%

The overall selection for the Doctoral Programme emphasizes a consistently strong academic record and performance in the test/interview. Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS categories are applicable as per Government of India norms.

All candidates seeking admission to the Doctoral Programme must meet the appropriate standards of medical fitness. The decision of the Institute Medical Board regarding a candidate’s medical fitness will be final.

To apply for the Ph.D. program, you should complete your application exclusively through the online mode and pay the required fee via SBI Collect.

Important Information for Employed Candidates

If you are currently employed and wish to pursue a Ph.D., you must submit a SPONSORSHIP/NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE from your employer at the time of admission. Failure to provide this certificate will result in the denial of admission.

Required Documents for Application

• Degree certificates and mark sheets for all qualifying examinations

• Proof of disability for PwD candidates (candidates with 40% or more physical disability)
• Proof documents for GATE/NET or any other equivalent examination recognized by MoE for fellowship awards
• Proof documents for CSIR/UGC/DST/AICTE/QIP Scheme or any other equivalent fellowship scheme
• EWS certificate issued after March 31, 2025, by the competent authority
• Proof documents for ICCR/MEAs/Study in India, etc. (if applicable)
