Categories of PhD Programmes

The Institute shall admit Ph.D. candidates in following categories of Ph.D. programmes:

A. Full-Time Research Scholars

I. Fellowship Research Scholars (Category Code: FT01)

  • These scholars shall be eligible for financial assistance in the form of fellowship at the approved rates and guidelines as notified by MoE/other ministries of Government of India from time to time.
  • The applicants must have qualified the National Level Test: UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE. The sponsored/ employed candidates are not eligible to apply under FT01 category.

II. Non-Fellowship Research Scholars (Category Code: FT01-A) 

  • These scholars will have to pursue their PhD program in self-finance mode (without any financial assistance from the Institute). Such applicants must mandatorily appear for Institute/Department level written examination as per GATE/NET Syllabus.
  • The applicants who have qualified the National Level Test: UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE are exempted from appearing in the written examination.

III. Externally Funded Research Scholars (Category Code: FT02)

  • These scholars shall receive fellowship from other agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST, etc. The applicants must have qualified the National Level Test: UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE.

IV. Sponsored Research Scholars (Category Code: FT03)

These scholars shall be sponsored by Government/Semi-Government Organizations/Institutions/Industry, and they are further classified into two categories:

  1. These scholars shall be sponsored by Government/Semi-Government Organizations/Reputed Private Institutions/Industry and will be under study leave from their parent organization. Such a candidate must be sponsored by the current employer and must have been in employment with the sponsoring Institutions/Organization for at least 02 years. Candidates in service are to be relieved on study leave or extraordinary leave from the Institution/Organization for Full-Time research work at NIT Hamirpur and must furnish a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from their current employer.
  2. These Research Scholars will receive financial support from foreign country through their government or awarded fellowship by the Government of India, under Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) or other such agencies/organizations for Doctoral programme. Such Research Scholars shall require approval from the Ministry of External Affairs and NOC from the MOE, and Government of India or are admitted under a MoU with such agencies.

The admission process of sponsored Doctoral Research Scholars of above two categories (a & b) would be as per the guidelines issued by the related coordinating agencies.

B. Part-Time Research Scholars

I. Institute Research Scholars (Category Code: PT01)

  • This category refers to PhD Research Scholars who are regular employees of the Institute or who are working on various sponsored projects undertaken by the Institute from various agencies/organizations.
  • They are expected to work for their PhD programme after fulfilling their normal duties. Candidates need to qualify an Institute/department level test.

II. Sponsored Research Scholars (Category Code: PT02)

  • This category comprises of PhD Research Scholars who are working professionals and are sponsored by their respective organizations. While working at their respective organizations, they can pursue the PhD work as a Research Scholar of the Institute.
  • Such PhD Research Scholars, after completion of residential requirement (completion of course work and minimum stay of 01 Year in the Institute campus), may be allowed to join his/her parent organization, where he/she will be doing the research work while serving the parent organization and would be allowed to continue as Part Time Research Scholar.
  • Those applicants who have their workplace within 500 kms radius of NIT Hamirpur can be exempted from the residency period and may be allowed to complete their course work through NPTEL/Swayam/MOOCs etc., if recommended by the supervisor with suitable justification and approval by Dean Academic. Candidates need to qualify an Institute/department level test.

Eligibility Criteria

a) Ph.D. in Engineering (i.e. Civil/Mechanical/Electrical/ Computer Science/Electronics & Communication)

The applicant must have passed Master’s degree in engineering/technology in the appropriate discipline. Open/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates must have secured minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in Master’s Degree. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master’s Degree shall be applicable.

OR

The applicant must have passed Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology in the appropriate discipline with minimum CGPI of 8.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 80% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 8.0. on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 75% marks in Bachelor’s Degree will be applicable.

The eligibility subject criterion for Ph.D. programme in Environmental Engineering is as under:

“The applicant must have passed Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology in the appropriate discipline” (other existing conditions remaining same as mentioned in this Clause above).

OR

The applicant must have passed Master’s degree (M.E./ M.Tech./ M.Arch.) in Civil/ Chemical/ Environmental Engineering/ Agriculture/ Atmospheric Science/ Biotechnology/ Mining/ Geotechnology/ Water Resource Engineering/ Environmental Science & Engineering/ Environmental Engineering and Management/ Energy and Environmental Engineering/Architecture.

b) Ph.D. in Engineering (Chemical/Materials Science & Engineering)

The applicant must have passed Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology in the appropriate discipline. Open/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates must have secured minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in Master’s Degree. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master’s Degree shall be applicable.

OR

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology in the appropriate discipline with minimum CGPI of 8.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 80% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 75% marks in Bachelor’s Degree.

OR

The applicant must have passed Master’s Degree in Science in the appropriate discipline, consistent with the research areas of the concerned Department (as decided by time to time by admitting departments and approval of Chairman Senate on recommendations of Dean Academic) with minimum CGPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 70% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 65% marks in Master’s Degree will be applicable.

c) Ph.D. in Department of Chemistry

The candidate must have passed Master Degree in Chemistry or equivalent with minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in case of Open/EWS /OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master Degree will be applicable.

d) Ph.D. in Department of Physics & Photonic Sciences

The candidate must have passed Master Degree in Physics or equivalent with minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in case of Open/EWS /OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master Degree will be applicable.

OR

Bachelor Degree in Engineering/Technology in the appropriate discipline with minimum CGPI of 8.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 80% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 75% marks in Bachelor Degree.

e) Ph.D. in Department of Mathematics & Scientific Computing

The candidate must have passed Master Degree in Mathematics/ Computer Science/ Mathematics & Computing or equivalent with minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in case of Open/EWS /OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master Degree will be applicable.

OR

Bachelor Degree in Engineering/Technology in the appropriate discipline with minimum CGPI of 8.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 80% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 75% marks in Bachelor Degree.

OR

The candidate must have passed UG degree in Mathematics/ Computer Science or equivalent and MCA with minimum CGPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 70% marks in case of Open/EWS /OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 65% marks in Master Degree will be applicable.

f) Ph.D. in Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

The candidate must have passed Master Degree in Humanities/Social Sciences (English/Economics/Sociology/Psychology/ Behavioural and Social Sciences) with minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master Degree will be applicable.

g) Ph.D. in Department of Management Studies

The candidate must have passed Master Degree in Management i.e. MBA with minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master Degree in Management will be applicable.

OR

Qualified Professionals/Executives with Bachelor Degree in Engineering/Technology and working with corporate houses, and having 02 years professional experience may be considered. Such candidates must have minimum CGPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 75% marks in Bachelor Degree in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 70% marks in Bachelor Degree will be applicable.

OR

The candidate must have passed Master Degree in Commerce (i.e. M. Com) with minimum CGPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 70% marks in case of Open/EWS /OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 65% marks in Master Degree will be applicable.

h) Ph.D. in Department of Architecture

The candidate must have passed both, Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture/Planning and Master’s Degree in Architecture/Planning or equivalent degree in appropriate branch. Open/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates must have secured minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in Master’s Degree. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master’s Degree shall be applicable.

OR

The applicant must have passed Bachelor Degree in Architecture/Planning discipline with minimum CGPI of 8.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 80% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 75% marks in Bachelor Degree will be applicable.

i) Ph.D. in Centre for Energy Studies

The applicant must have passed Master’s Degree (M.E./M.Tech./M.Arch) in Civil/Chemical/ Environmental Engineering/Agriculture/ Atmospheric Science/ Biotechnology/ Mining/ Geotechnology/ Water Resource Engineering/ Environmental Science & Engineering/Environmental Engineering and Management/Energy and Environmental Engineering/Architecture/Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics. Open/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates must have secured minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in Master’s Degree. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 55% marks in Master’s Degree shall be applicable.

OR

The applicant must have passed Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology in the appropriate discipline with minimum CGPI of 8.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 80% marks in case of Open/EWS/OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ST/ PwD candidates, a minimum CGPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 75% marks in Bachelor’s Degree will be applicable.

OR

Master’s Degree in Sciences or equivalent with minimum CGPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 70% marks in case of Open/ EWS/ OBC-NCL category. Whereas, in case of SC/ ST/ PwD candidates, minimum CGPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent) or 60% marks in Master’s Degree will be applicable.

*The above qualifications are bare minimum and the departments are empowered to fix higher criterion.

Additional Requirements for Sponsored Candidates (Category Code: FT03 & PT02)

A candidate who fulfills the eligibility criteria and is sponsored by his/her employer may be considered for admission provided he/she fulfills the following conditions:

  • The sponsored candidate must attach the No Objection Certificate / Sponsorship Certificate in the prescribed format as per Annexure II on the letterhead of the institution/organization/industry along with the application. In case the candidate fails to attach the certificate in format Annexure II with the application form then his application shall not be considered.
  • The sponsoring organization must be a reputed medium or large-scale Government organization/private industry or any AICTE recognized technical Institution.
  • The sponsored candidate must have been in regular service of the sponsoring organization for at least two years. The sponsoring organization must specifically undertake to relieve him/her to pursue the PhD programme as per the admission category requirement.

Application Process

  • The applicants have to apply on the prescribed Application Form available in this Information Brochure. No other form of application shall be accepted.
  • The duly filled-in Application Form along with all necessary documents in serial order (in single pdf) must be uploaded on the Google Form on or before last date. Google Form Link: https://forms.gle/9UucuPnMQS5WN3A49
  • Application processing fee of Rs.1200/- for Open / EWS / OBC-NCL and Rs. 600/- for SC / ST / PwD per application is to be paid online through SBI Collect (https://www.onlinesbi.sbi/sbicollect/icollecthome.htm) as per the procedure mentioned (see Annexure-1 for details). Application Fee once paid shall not be refunded.
  • If a candidate is applying for more than one Department then separate application is to be submitted along with the application processing fee for each application.

Selection Process

  • Selection will be based on Written test and/or Interview/Presentation.
