PhD Admission Categories

Eligibility Criteria

Engineering/ Technology/ Design/ Architecture/ Management

  • An applicant must possess Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture/Management in the respective discipline or equivalent.
  • They must have a first class/ 60% or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in any one of the degrees.
  • Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology or equivalent, having a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or equivalent CGPA as determined by NSUT, and having proven research capability, may also be considered eligible.
  • For Computer Science specifically: An applicant must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Sciences/Computer Applications and a Master’s degree in Computer Applications (with Mathematics at B.Sc./B.C.A level) with a minimum 75% in aggregate or equivalent CGPA as determined by NSUT, and having proven research capability.
  • Equivalence of degrees will be decided/ascertained by the concerned RAC/BRS.

Sciences/ Humanities/ Social Sciences

  • An applicant must possess a Master’s Degree in Sciences/ Humanities /Social Sciences in the respective discipline or equivalent.
  • They must have a minimum of 55% of marks or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Teaching Cum Research Fellowship (TRF) Eligibility Criteria

Engineering /Technology /Design /Architecture / Management

  • An applicant must possess Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Engineering /Technology/ Design/ Architecture/ Management in the respective discipline or equivalent.
  • They must have 70% or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in any one of the degrees.
  • Equivalence of degrees will be decided/ascertained by the concerned RAC/BRS.

Sciences /Humanities /Social Sciences

  • An applicant must possess a Master’s Degree in Sciences /Humanities /Social Sciences in the respective discipline or equivalent.
  • They must have a minimum of 65% of marks or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

General Notes on Eligibility

  • If the equivalence between the percentage of marks and Cumulative Grade Point Average is not defined by the University from where the candidate obtained the qualifying degree, the most recent University Grants Commission/All India Council for Technical Education equivalence criteria shall apply.
  • There shall be no age limit for admission to the Ph.D. programme of the University.

Selection Procedure

  • The Research Scholars shall be admitted in a two-stage process – (i) a University Entrance Test/UGC- CSIR NET and (ii) an Interview.
  • The admission into the Ph.D. programme shall be based either on Entrance Test conducted by NSUT or the National Eligibility Test (NET) score earned by the candidates in the UGC-CSIR NET (Category I, II & III) meant for admission into Ph.D programme. However, the department shall adopt University Entrance Test or NET score as per directions of the concerned BRS.
  • The Test Paper of the Entrance Examination shall consist of questions, with equal weightage (50% each), on (a) Research Methodology- Research aptitude/ Analytical ability / Comprehension / Quantitative Aptitude and (b) the Subject-specific domain. The BRS, on recommendations of the Department Research Committee, shall approve the syllabus for the entrance test.
  • The University shall notify the detailed information well in advance through its website and/ or advertisement in at least two national newspapers. Detailed information and admission procedure/ brochure/syllabus shall be put up on the University website.
  • The students who have secured 50% marks above in the university entrance test shall be eligible to be called for the interview.
  • However, a relaxation of 5% of marks (from 50% to 45%) shall be allowed in the entrance examination for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy layers)/Differently-abled category, Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.
  • The candidates with a research fellowship such as UGC-CSIR NET JRF (category I) or others, as identified by the Board of Research Studies, shall be exempted from the university written test. However, they shall have to appear in the interview.
  • Project staff under projects, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology/University Grants Commission/any Government agency, Industry or centers established from a grant-in-aid from Government or international agencies at the Netaji Subhas University of Technology, may be given administrative clearance to seek admission, subject to the recommendations of the concerned Principal Investigator of the said project/Centre and approval by the respective Chairman, Board of Research Studies and Vice- Chancellor. The project staff under projects shall be required to fulfill the eligibility conditions as laid down in regulation and shall have to appear in both the entrance test and interview.
  • The Candidates from Research Development Organizations/ Institutions/ Public Sector Undertakings/Industries/ Foreign Universities which have a ‘Memorandum of Understandings (MoU)’ with Netaji Subhas University of Technology may be exempted from the entrance examination. These candidates can be called directly for the interview as sponsored candidates subject to the fulfillment of the minimum entry qualification for the Ph.D. degree as given in Regulation. Provided that — The applicant has at least two years of experience in a regular capacity. (i) The applicant shall prove, to the satisfaction of the University, that his official duties permit him to devote sufficient time to research. (ii) The applicant can devote sufficient time to pursue research in the concerned Department of the Netaji Subhas University of Technology daily unless sufficient facilities for research are available at the applicant’s place of work in the chosen field of research, provided that the BRS approves the same as his/her second place of work. (iii) He/she shall be required to reside at the Netaji Subhas University of Technology until completing his/her course work. This condition of minimum residence shall be automatically waived off for the candidate working in the Delhi National Capital Region.
  • The regular employees of NSUT/any other Engineering Education Department / Institution of Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, desiring to register for the Ph.D. Programme, may be exempted from the entrance examination and may be called directly for the interview subject to submission of a ‘No-Objection Certificate’ from the competent authority of the respective Institution. Such employees shall be required to fulfill the eligibility conditions as laid down in regulation.

Application Process

  • Candidates have to apply online through the official website of NSUT.
  • Separate application forms should be filled for Ph.D. programs for each Department. Wrong information will lead to rejection of application/cancellation of admission.
  • Applications will be accepted from candidates whose results for the qualifying examination (B.Tech/M.Tech, as applicable) are expected to be declared on or before the last date specified in this Information Brochure.
