Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates holding a 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8- semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or a professional degree or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree of Kazi Nazrul University in the subject concerned or allied/relevant subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC-7 point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, may apply to the Registrar in the prescribed form for admission to the Ph.D. programme in any of the subjects in which the Doctoral Degree may have been instituted.
  • In case of a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree Programme (with research) should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks or equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC and notification of the state government from time to time.
  • The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualification marks without including the grace mark procedures.
  • Candidates who have qualified in the UGC-NET or UGC-CSIR NET under different categories (eligible for admission to Ph.D. with JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor/ eligible for admission to Ph.D. without JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor/ eligible for admission to Ph.D. only within period of validity)/ SET/ SLET/GATE/ ICMR/DBT or Similar National level Tests or teacher fellowship shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme except Ph.D. (technology).
  • For admission to Ph.D. in Technology, M.E./M.Tech. in allied/ relevant discipline is mandatory. Candidates with M.E./M.Tech. degree are exempted from GATE.
  • State level reservation policy alongwith relevant court orders wherever applicable, shall be taken into consideration while admitting students in the Ph.D. Programme.

Selection Process

Each eligible candidate shall have to appear for an interview/Viva-voce of 100 marks to be conducted by the individual University Department concerned/University Centre for Studies concerned. At the time of interview, the interview board will objectively assess the research interest of the candidate in the relevant field/area and award marks giving weightage as follows:

Case 1: JRF qualified/awarded candidates

  • Eligibility: Candidates who are JRF qualified or have been awarded JRF.
  • Selection Mode: Viva-voce only.
  • Weightage: 100% for Viva-voce.
  • Total Marks: 100

Case 2: Candidates with valid NET/SET/GATE/other similar national level tests (with a valid test score)

  • Eligibility: Candidates holding valid NET/SET/GATE/other similar national level tests, where a valid test score is available, as per University Regulations.
  • Selection Mode: Valid Test Score and Viva-voce.
  • Weightage:
    • 70% for the Valid Test Score.
    • 30% for Viva-voce.
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Note: If the percentage of score in written tests is not available, the candidate will be considered under Category 3.

Case 3: Candidates qualified in NET/SET/GATE/other similar national level tests (without a valid test score)

  • Eligibility: Candidates qualified in NET/SET/GATE/other similar national level tests, but without a valid test score available, as per University Regulations.
  • Selection Mode: 10th Standard, 12th Standard, Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and Viva-voce.
  • Weightage:
    • 10% for 10th Standard marks.
    • 10% for 12th Standard marks.
    • 25% for Undergraduate (UG) marks.
    • 25% for Postgraduate (PG) marks.
    • 30% for Viva-voce.
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Note: Marks for 10th, 12th, UG, and PG will be awarded based on the percentage of marks obtained by the candidate, assuming a standardized total of 100 marks.

Application Process

  • The applicants are advised to follow the instructions in the online portal of the University while filling up the Application Forms online.
  • All in-service applicants (including those intending to pursue Ph.D. as part-time scholars) shall have to apply through proper channel and they have to submit ‘No Objection’ Certificate from their employer at the time of admission.
