Eligibility

  • Candidates who have completed a 1-year/2-semester Master’s Degree programme after a 4- year/8-semester Bachelor’s Degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester Master’s Degree programme after a 3-year/6-semester Bachelor’s Degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by any Indian, Foreign Universities recognized by UGC and AIU respectively, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed.
  • Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University/State Government from time to time.

PhD Entrance Test

  • The Entrance Test shall consist of questions based on Research methodology (50%) and the subject/broad field of study concerned (50%).
  • The duration of the examination shall be two hours.
  • The maximum marks for the examination shall be 70 and consists of descriptive and multiple choice questions.
  • Entrance Test will be based on the syllabus for UGC/CSIR/NET examinations.
  • The Question paper shall consist of two parts
    • Part A – 35 Marks Consisting of multiple-choice (20 Marks) and descriptive questions (15 Marks) related to research aptitude, mathematical/numerical ability/logical reasoning, English language competence and computer awareness.
    • Part B – 35 Marks Consisting of objective type questions (20 Marks) & descriptive type questions(15 Marks) from the subject concerned.
  • Candidates securing a minimum of 50% marks, 45% marks in the case of SC/ST/OBC/differently-abled category, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per decision of the State government / University from time to time as the case may be, in the entrance examinations shall be called for the Interview before Department Research Committee. There will be no revaluation of answer scripts.
  • Candidates qualified UGC/CSIR NET in the year 2023 and earlier sessions shall apply for the Ph.D admission under Entrance Test Category.
  • Candidates who have already applied for the Ph.D. programme in response to the Kannur University Ph.D. Admission 2024-25 Notification No. RDC/C1/PhD Admn/2024 dated 01.10.2024 & 15.10.2.24 need not apply again. Those who are qualified in the NET for the 2024 session but applied in response to the aforementioned notification with a NET qualification certificate from 2023 or an earlier session must submit their June 2024 NET qualification certificate to the Research and Development Cell of Kannur University in order to be exempted from the entrance test.

Exemption from Entrance Test

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC), vide its public notice dated 27.03.2024 decided that the National Eligibility Test (NET) score can be used for admission to Ph.D. programs in place of entrance tests conducted by the different Universities/HEIs from the Academic Session 2024-25 onwards. Accordingly, from the academic session 2024- 25, Kannur University will use the National Eligibility Test (NET) scores for admission to Ph.D. Programmes.
  • For candidates qualified under category 1, the admission shall be solely based on an interview conducted by the Department Research Committee of the subject concerned.
  • For students who qualify in Categories 2 (2024 session) and 3, 70% weightage will be given for test scores and 30% weightage for the interview for admission to Ph.D. programmes. The Ph.D. admission will be based on the combined merit of NET marks and the marks obtained in the interview/viva voce.
  • The marks obtained in the NET by the candidates in Categories 2 and 3 will be valid for a period of one year for admission to Ph.D.
  • Candidates with a valid score in national-level tests such as GATE/CEED, etc., can apply under Category 1.

Interview

  • Candidates shortlisted after the entrance examination must submit a synopsis of their proposed research work to the Department Research Committee. Candidates exempt from the entrance test shall submit their research synopsis during the online application process.
  • In the interview/viva-voce, candidates will discuss their research interest/area through a synopsis presentation.
  • Candidates will receive interview date information from the conveners of the respective Department Research Committees.
  • Interviews may be conducted online, offline, or hybrid, as determined by the DRC convener. Candidates will be notified via email, SMS, or telephone.
  • For entrance test cleared candidates, the interview is worth 30 marks. A minimum of 15 interview marks and 55% aggregate marks are required for Ph.D. admission.
  • For Category I entrance exemption candidates, the interview carries 100% weightage, evaluating proposal’s scientific merit, presentation skills, and clarity.
  • For Categories 2 (2024 session) and 3 entrance exemption candidates, 70% weightage is given to test scores, and 30% to the interview. The interview evaluates proposal’s scientific merit, presentation skills, and clarity.
  • Department Research Committees will publish the final ranked list, and selected candidates will be admitted to the Ph.D. course work.
  • Phil degree holders (awarded within five years before 03.06.2023) may be exempt from course work upon DRC recommendation, requiring them to pass four papers: Research & Publication Ethics, Subject Specific Paper, Review of Literature, and Broad area of Research.

Application

  • Applications must be submitted ONLINE from February 17, 2025, to February 28, 2025, via the link on the Kannur University official website (www.kannuruniversity.ac.in).
  • Applicants should submit only one application.
  • The application fee of Rs. 680/- must be paid online through SBI e-pay on the University Website.
  • The application process is only complete after fee payment. Fees are non-refundable.
  • Incomplete or incorrect applications will be rejected.
  • Candidates are advised to apply well before the deadline.
  • The application process is entirely online; hard copies are not required. However, saving a digital or printed copy of the application is recommended.
