Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) invites applications from motivated, young students for conducting research in various aspects of weather and climate science leading to Ph.D. Degree of AcSIR in Physical Sciences.

IITM is an autonomous research institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, and an Associate Academic Centre of AcSIR for Ph.D. program.

Vacancy

No. of Regular (with valid fellowship) Ph.D. positions: 20 (UR-10, OBC-05, SC-03, ST-01, EWS-01) – 01 post of these is reserved for PwBD

Essential Qualifications for Regular Position

The candidates should have –

  • A Post Graduate degree from a recognized University in Physical Sciences [includes Physics/ Applied Physics/ Atmospheric Sciences/ Meteorology/ Oceanography / Climate Science/ Geophysics with Meteorology/ Environmental Sciences/ Electronics or related subjects] / Chemical Sciences [includes Chemistry/ Physical Chemistry/ Inorganic Chemistry/ Organic Chemistry or related subjects]/ Mathematical Sciences [includes Mathematics/ Applied Mathematics/ statistics or related subjects]. OR M. Tech. in Atmospheric/ Oceanic Sciences or related subjects OR Master’s degree from any branch of Engineering. AND
  • A valid national-level fellowship (from national funding agencies such as CSIR, UGC, DBT, DST etc. or any other equivalent valid fellowship such as INSPIRE, RGNF etc. – Candidates with provisional fellowship may apply but in case the fellowship does not get approved, such candidates will be eligible for continuation of their Ph.D. on self-sponsored basis. No financial assistance shall be provided from the institute in such cases.)
  • Minimum 55% marks (without rounding off) or equivalent grade for General (UR)/General-EWS and minimum 50% marks (without rounding off) or equivalent grade for OBC (NCL)/SC/ST, Third gender and Persons with Disability (PwD).
  • Studied Physics or Mathematics subjects at bachelor’s degree.

  • Closing date of online admission portal: 15 May, 2025
  • Interview/Test: 16 May, 2025 to 4 July, 2025
  • Declaration of results: 14 July, 2025

  • SC/ST/PWD candidate: Rs. 500/-
