Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore invites application for admission to PhD Program for 2025-26.

About IIA Bangalore

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics is a DST-funded, research institute, devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics and related areas of physics. The main campus is located in Koramangala, Bangalore. Additionally, the institute also has various field centres, including the Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST) at Hosakote, Bangalore, and the observing facilities at Gauribidanur, Hanle, Kavalur and Kodaikanal.

IIA Bangalore PhD Programs

IIA PU PhD – In collaboration with the Pondicherry University (PU), IIA runs IIA-PU Ph.D programme. This is a full-time research programme where in the students work towards their Ph.D. degree under the supervision of an IIA faculty member.

Students join the programme in either the first semester beginning in August or the second semester beginning in January. This Ph.D programme is central to the Institute’s thrust areas of research in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Eligibility Criteria

A. You may apply if :

• (a) you have qualified for JRF in the CSIR/UGC-NET exam in Physics (2024, 2025), or
• (b) scored 95.00 percentile or above in the JEST (2024) exam in Physics, or
• (c) scored 95.00 percentile or above in GATE (2024, 2025) exam in Physics

Note: Scores must be valid at the time of admission.

NOTE: Percentile = [(T-R)/T]*100, where T = Total number of candidates, and R = All India Rank.

B. IMPORTANT: Our admission criteria also require the candidate to have scored an aggregate of 60% marks or above throughout his/her academic career.

C. Age Limit: Maximum 28 years as of 31^st May, 2025.

Application Process

Eligible candidates have to apply online through the official website of IIA.

Register using a valid email address. Message with further instructions will be sent to the registered email address.

Read the instructions carefully and complete the application form.

• Please provide all details of the marks/GPA for all examinations taken so far. Please normalize the GPA to 100%, i.e., if the GPA is out of 10, multiply by 10 etc.
• If you are currently studying in a degree programme, please mention the expected date of its completion and enter the marks up to the last examination for which the marks are available
• If you have studied in a college, please mention both the name of the college and the name of the university to which it is affiliated.
• Please verify that you have filled in your postal and e-mail addresses and phone numbers correctly. If you are called for an interview, the call letter will be sent to email.
• Please keep scanned copies your recent photograph (jpg / png/ jpeg formats only; sizes preferably less than 250 kb ), mark sheets and certificates (pdfs only ; sizes preferably less than 250 kb ) ready. You will be prompted to upload them on the final preview page. If called for the interview you will be asked to bring originals of the relevant documents for verification.
• Before uploading scanned documents please ensure that all scanned documents are clear and readable .

Admission Process

Based on the overall academic performance an initial screening will be done. Shortlisted candidates may be called for an interview.

Candidates have to produced original documents of all academic records (mark sheets, certificates etc.) upon demand. If any false information is found in the online application, it will lead to automatic and immediate disqualification of the candidate.

Applicants working in government organizations must submit a No Objection Certificate from the employers at the time of interview.

Note-

• The interview will be held offline at IIA main campus, Bengaluru.
• Only short-listed candidates will be called for interview.
• In case of difficulty in holding the interview offline, we may conduct it online.
• In the worst case, the admission process is likely to be suspended.
• Written exam may be conducted to screen the short-listed applicants further for the interview.
