The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) invites applications for its PhD and Integrated PhD programmes in Theoretical Physics starting in August 2025.
About Program
IMSc, a pioneering institute specializing in theoretical physics, mathematics, theoretical computer science, and computational biology, offers a diverse range of research activities.
The theoretical physics group offers students the freedom to explore and shape their research careers through PhD/Integrated PhD programs.
These programs provide students with advanced analytical and computational skills to solve contemporary physics problems. Existing collaborative opportunities with researchers from various Indian and international institutions provide opportunities to greatly enhance the research experience.
IMSc is an autonomous national research institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, and a constituent institution of the Homi Bhaba National Institute (HBNI), Mumbai (a deemed university).
PhD degrees will be awarded by HBNI.

Eligibility
- Masters degree in Physics for PhD admissions.
- Bachelors degree in Physics or BE/B.Tech for Integrated PhD admission.
- Valid test score or rank from either UGC-CSIR NET, JEST or GATE in Physics.

Receipt of a complete application before the deadline does not guarantee an interview spot. Based on the applications we receive, we will shortlist candidates for the in-person interview; shortlist to be announced soon after last date of applications.
Selection Process
Selection interviews (tentative):
- Interviews for admission to the physics Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs at IMSc, to be held in-person.
- First Round: Week starting April 21, 2025, for candidates applying through GATE 2025 and UGC-CSIT NET 2024. Only for PhD admissions.
- Second Round: Process delayed due to delay in JEST 2025.
