The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) invites applications for admission to the Ph.D. program from eligible candidates for the semester commencing in August 2025 in the following areas of research. The applicants are requested to kindly read the instructions carefully and apply through the online portal link given below for each category of admission.
Vacancy
Departments and Research Areas:
- English and Translation Studies: Translation Studies, Comparative Indian Literature, Tibetan Literature, World Literature & Literary Theory, Contemporary American and British Fiction
- Economics: Health Economics, Environmental Economics
- Sociology: Urban Studies, Economic Anthropology, Tribal Economy, Transformation in Post-reform India, Anthropology of Texts and Literatures, Sociology of Science
- History: Global South Asia, 19th Century Imperial History
Eligibility Criteria
Full-time Ph.D. Program
- Postgraduate degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, English, Philosophy or related disciplines, with a minimum 55% mark or CGPA of 6.0 on 10 points. The candidates belonging to reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC (NCL), PWD) will be given relaxation as per institute norms.
- Must have qualified UGC–JRF/NET/GATE/ or equivalent examination.
- Candidates who have completed their BS-MS/M.Sc./MA/MBA/or equivalent postgraduate degrees from IITs, IISERs, IISc, IIMs or any of the top 100 institutes according to NIRF ranking 2025 (overall category) at the time of application will be exempted from the mandatory requirements of qualifying UGC–JRF/NET/GATE/or equivalent examination.
Part-time Ph.D. Program
- Postgraduate degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, English, Philosophy, or related disciplines with a minimum 55% mark or CGPA of 6.0 on 10 points. The candidates belonging to reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC(NCL), PWD) will be given relaxation as per institute norms.
- Minimum two years of work experience (employed in industry/organization having R&D facilities and recognized by DST/IIT Mandi, national laboratories, reputed universities/ colleges, or employed in research/analysis jobs in the public or private sector).
External Registration Program (ERP)
- Postgraduate degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, English, Philosophy, or related disciplines with a minimum 55% mark or CGPA of 6.0 on 10 points. The candidates belonging to reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC(NCL), PWD) will be given relaxation as per institute norms.
- Minimum two years of work experience (employed in industry/organization having R&D facilities and recognized by DST/IIT Mandi, national laboratories, reputed universities/colleges, or employed in research/analysis jobs in the public or private sector).
- A research scholar under the External Registration Program normally carries out part or all the research work at the place of employment under the supervision of a co-supervisor also employed in the same organization and a supervisor at IIT Mandi.
