IIT Jammu PhD Admission 2026-27 (July Session)

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu invites application for PhD admission 2026-27 (July Session) in various departments.

Categories of PhD Admission

The applicants can apply for admission to the Ph.D. programme under any one of the following categories:

• Institute Research student/candidate (Full Time)
• Full Time externally funded students s (UGC, CSIR, GPAT, SERB, DST, PMRF etc.)
• External Project funding (Full Time)
• Off Campus – External
• Off Campus – Part time
• Institute Staff

Eligibility Criteria

Regular (Full time)

Applicants with the following qualifications shall be eligible for application to a full-time PhD program at the Institute:

• A Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology along with a good academic record. or
• Master’s degree in Science (with a good academic record) and a valid GATE / UGC-CSIR NET (JRF or LS) /GPAT/ NBHM/ ICMR (JS) / ICAR (JS) or equivalent qualification in the relevant area tenable for the year of registration. or
• Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with an exceptional academic record and a valid GATE score in the eligible discipline/paper code.
• Exemption for GATE under schemes as agreed by IIT Council for students of NITs/IITs/IIITs/IISERs/IISc may be acceptable. The Candidate should have a minimum of 8.0 CGPA during the B.Tech program from these institutes.
• UGC-CSIR NET Lectureship (LS) can be used as a selection criterion if the candidate qualifies for the interview cum selection process at the department level, and Institute fellowship can be granted to such candidates.

Off Campus – External

• A candidate working as a regular employee in a government institution/ R&D organization/ relevant private industry/academic institution, which is equipped with the necessary infrastructure for carrying out research facilities and such a candidate must be sponsored by his/her employer and must have been in employment with the sponsoring organization for at least two years at the time of admission
• The organization(s) should have signed MoU with IIT Jammu. However, the MoU be waived off for Govt, PSU, Research labs and established companies private universities and academic institutes having the NIRF ranking up to 100 under the engineering category and up to 150 under the university category (in previous published year). For other institutions, MoU is required. (NoC shall be required in each case).
• The applicant will be deputed/given leave for the coursework during his/her residence period at IIT Jammu (minimum of 1 semester to maximum of 3 semesters). In addition to this, the candidate will be relieved at least for 3 weeks over every six month period (typically every semester) in parts or at stretch to meet supervisor and carry out his/her research in the IIT Jammu campus.
• The candidate should visit IIT Jammu campus at the end of every semester to present his/her progress to SRC and submit a report to the supervisor.
• Attendance shall be marked by the candidate during their stay on campus.
• Candidates should have well-established research facilities on the parent campus. The majority of the research work shall be carried out in the parent organization.
• Candidates should have one supervisor from the parent organization who is a doctorate in the relevant field.
• The supervisor from IIT Jammu should be allowed to visit the organization/lab/industry once a year for mutual research benefit.
• The minimum qualification for these candidates is the same as for full-time regular candidates.

Off Campus – Part time

• Candidates working as a regular full-time employee in a government institution/ R&D organization/ relevant private industries/ CRPF/ Indian Armed Forces are eligible to apply. The parent organization should be located in the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh regions only.
• The applicant will be deputed/given leave for the coursework during his/her residence period at IIT Jammu (minimum of 1 semester to maximum of 3 semesters). In addition to this, he will be relieved at the end of every semester (for 3 weeks) to meet supervisor and carry out his/her research on the IIT Jammu campus.
• Part-time PhD candidates will utilize the research infrastructure of IIT Jammu for their thesis research work, and a supervisor at the parent organization is not mandatory.
• The minimum qualifications for these candidates are the same as for full-time regular candidates.

Merely applying for / being shortlisted/appearing for the interview / written test / or subsequent processes does not imply that a candidate will necessarily be admitted in IIT Jammu.

Departments/Centers of the Institute reserve the right to restrict the number of candidates to be called for interview to a reasonable number, based on qualifications and/or experience. A higher shortlisting criteria may be used by the departments in this regard.
