Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu invites application for PhD admission 2025-26 (Aug Session) in various departments.

Categories of PhD Admission
The applicants can apply for admission to the Ph.D. programme under any one of the following categories:
- Institute Research student/candidate (Full Time)
- Full Time externally funded students s (UGC, CSIR, GPAT, SERB, DST, PMRF, Visvesvaraya scheme etc.)
- External Project funding (Full Time)
- Off Campus – External
- Off Campus – Part time
- Institute Staff
Eligibility Criteria
Regular (Full time)
Applicants with the following qualifications shall be eligible for application to a full-time PhD program at the Institute:
- A Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology along with a good academic record. or
- Master’s degree in Science (with a good academic record) and a valid GATE / UGC-CSIR NET (JRF or LS) /GPAT/ NBHM/ ICMR (JS) / ICAR (JS) or equivalent qualification in the relevant area tenable for the year of registration. or
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with an exceptional academic record and a valid GATE score in the eligible discipline/paper code.
- Exemption for GATE under schemes as agreed by IIT Council for students of NITs/IITs/IIITs/IISERs/IISc may be acceptable. The Candidate should have a minimum of 8.0 CGPA during the B.Tech program from these institutes.
- UGC-CSIR NET Lectureship (LS) can be used as a selection criterion if the candidate qualifies for the interview cum selection process at the department level, and Institute fellowship can be granted to such candidates.
Off Campus – External
- Candidates working as a regular full-time employee in a government institution/ R&D organization/ relevant private industries are eligible to apply.
- Candidates must be sponsored by their employer and must have been in employment with the sponsoring organization for at least two years at the time of admission. The organization(s) should sign an MoU with IIT Jammu.
- The employer must expressly undertake to relieve him/her to stay on the campus to enable the candidate to complete the “Course work” (it may take up to 3 semesters based on the pace of the student) and attend the evaluation presentations at the end of every semester.
- Candidates should have a minimum residency period of one semester on campus. Visits at the end of each semester until completion of the program are mandatory.
- Candidates should have well-established research facilities on the parent campus. The majority of the research work shall be carried out in the parent organization.
- Candidates should have one supervisor from the parent organization who is a doctorate in the relevant field.
- The supervisor from IIT Jammu should be allowed to visit the organization/lab/industry once a year for mutual research benefit.
- The minimum qualification for these candidates is the same as for full-time regular candidates.
Off Campus – Part time
- Candidates working as a regular full-time employee in a government institution/ R&D organization/ relevant private industries/ CRPF/ Indian Armed Forces are eligible to apply. The parent organization should be located in the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh regions only.
- The employer must expressly undertake to relieve him/her to stay on the campus to enable the candidate to complete the “Course work” and attend the evaluation presentations at the end of every semester.
- A candidate applying for admission to the Part-time PhD program must spend at least 6 weeks per semester on the IIT campus to work.
- Part-time PhD candidates will utilize the research infrastructure of IIT Jammu for their thesis research work, and a supervisor at the parent organization is not mandatory.
- The minimum qualifications for these candidates are the same as for full-time regular candidates.

Merely applying for / being shortlisted/appearing for the interview / written test / or subsequent processes does not imply that a candidate will necessarily be admitted in IIT Jammu.
Departments/Centers of the Institute reserve the right to restrict the number of candidates to be called for interview to a reasonable number, based on qualifications and/or experience. A higher shortlisting criteria may be used by the departments in this regard.
