Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs) and Qualifying Examination (QE)

  • B.E/B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Automobile Engg; Marine Engineering; Ceramic Engineering; Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Reliability Engineering Production Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering or any other field of Engineering/Technology &
  • ME/MTech or MS (Research): Mechanical Engineering/ Technology/ Metallurgy Engineering/ Energy Systems Engineering; Energy and Environment; Energy Engineering; Automobile Engineering; Thermal Engineering; Heat Power; Energy Materials, Fluids & Thermal Engineering, Cryogenics & Vacuum Technology, Hydraulic Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Machine Design, CAD/CAM, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology or any other field of Engineering/Technology with first division* and GATE qualification OR
  • Four-year Bachelors degree OR five-year integrated degree in the Mechanical Engineering or any other field of Engineering/Technology (with first division*) AND valid GATE qualification

For INTERNATIONAL applicants

  • Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs): Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering (with first division)
  • Qualifying Examination (QE): Valid TOEFL/IELTS OR equivalent qualification OR Valid GATE qualification

* Marks /CGPA/ CPI/ Percentage requirements in Qualifying Degrees : –

For UR/EWS/OBC(NCL) category:

  • A minimum of 60% marks in aggregate, OR
  • A First class as specified by the university, OR
  • A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.0 on a scale of 0 – 10, OR
  • An equivalent to 6.0 CGPA/ CPI on other corresponding proportional requirements when the scales are other than 0 – 10.

For SC/ST/PwD category

  • A minimum of 55% marks in aggregate, OR
  • A First class as specified by the university, OR
  • A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a scale of 0 – 10, OR
  • An equivalent to 5.5 CGPA/ CPI on other corresponding proportional requirements when the scales are other than 0 – 10.

Application Procedure

  • Applicants have to apply ONLINE through official website of IIT Indore.
  • After submitting the application online the eligible candidates have to bring the signed hard-copy of the application along with payment receipt, recent photograph, self- attested copy of the relevant certificates, additional forms at the time of Written Test / Interview.

Mere fulfilment of the essential qualifications does not guarantee admission to PhD program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The selection will be based on the overall performance, which may include a written test, interview, academic background, suitability for research in the chosen field/area, research aptitude, communication skills, and others.

Shortlisted applicants will be called for a written test/interview via email only. So, it is advised that the applicants mention their email id correctly.

Shortlisted candidates must arrange recommendation letters (in the given format only) of at least two referees well before appearing for a written test/interview. Also, they must submit a statement of purpose explaining why they would like to pursue the Ph.D. in the specific area (200 to 300 words) well before appearing for a written test/interview. Format of the “Recommendation letter” and “Statement of Purpose” can be downloaded from https://academic.iiti.ac.in/phdadvt.php. Referees of shortlisted candidates must send reference letters to admission-me@iiti.ac.in.

Candidates who are Fellowship Awardees (FA) should send a combined pdf with a letter of the fellowship award (i.e. from CSIR, UGC, DST, PMRF, etc.) along with the application form generated after applying online (form should be signed and photograph must be affixed) to admission-me@iiti.ac.in within deadline given of online application.
