The JP Narayan National Centre of Excellence in the Humanities at IIT Indore invites applications for admission to its Ph.D. Program for 2025 (May).

About the Centre

Jaya Prakash Narayan National Centre of Excellence in the Humanities was established in October 2022 with the specific objective of facilitating and developing cutting-edge research projects and academic programmes in the areas of Digital and Environmental Humanities.

Programme Highlights

The PhD Programme in Digital and Environmental Humanities offers an innovative and unique programme while also maintaining rigorous academic excellence.

The primary objective of the programme is to train students in these interdisciplinary areas so they can either pursue career in research or acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to be absorbed in Museums, libraries, the publishing industry, think tanks, policy centres, corporate and legal firms.

This interdisciplinary doctoral programme consciously incorporates a very high mix of theoretical knowledge and practical projects, experiments and hands-on experience with problem solving challenges.

The Centre supports scholars for various national and international conferences, workshops, fieldwork, etc.

The Centre also has various schemes by the International Office to visit and work in globally renowned institutions. IIT Indore and the Centre have publications in highly reputed refereed international journals. PhD scholars are encouraged to publish during the program.

The Centre provides an open, friendly research environment with a world-class physical infrastructure equipped with the most recent database, software, and research tools.

Eligibility Criteria

• MPhil degree in a relevant discipline of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) (with first division as defined by the awarding Institute/ University) AND UGC-JRF/ UGCNET*/GATE* in the relevant discipline of HSS/Humanities OR
• Master’s degree in a relevant specialization of HSS (with first division as defined by the awarding Institute/ University) AND UGC-JRF/ UGC-NET */GATE* in Humanities/HSS. OR
• Masters’ degree in other relevant specialization of these two research areas (with first division as defined by the awarding Institute/ University) AND UGC-JRF/ UGCNET*/Equivalent Fellowship. GATE qualification is not compulsory for DF / IS / CT / SW category.

*UGC-NET/GATE qualified students will be considered under JPN Centre’ Funded Fellowship which will be limited to 2 seats.

Application Procedure

• Applicants have to apply ONLINE through official website of IIT Indore.
• After submitting the application online the eligible candidates have to bring the signed hard-copy of the application along with payment receipt, recent photograph, self- attested copy of the relevant certificates, additional forms at the time of Written Test / Interview.

No TA/DA will be provided to the applicants if called for the written test and(or) interview.

You MUST select an appropriate research area in the discipline you are applying to. There will be a written exam and/or interview. During the written exam, applicants will have to write a Statement of purpose explaining reasons for pursuing doctoral research. The Centre conducts a rigorous evaluation process and reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for the written test and/or interview.
