PhD Admission Categories

Full-Time PhD

  • Regular Full-Time Program with MoE Fellowship – HTRA
  • Regular Full-Time Program with Financial Support from Sponsored Project / External Funding Scheme from Govt. (DST/UGC/ CSIR/DRDO/NBHM, etc.)

Part-Time PhD

  • For permanent employees of Government R&D labs, educational institutions, Govt. Organizations, Govt. industry, PSUs/State undertakings, who can submit No Objection Certificate from their employee and are working in the cadre equivalent to Scientist-C/Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Government having at least three years of experience are eligible.
  • For employees of Private Organization/Industry/Educational Institutions standing (i.e., established at least five years before the last date of applying for Ph.D. (Part-time) admission as per the advertisement) with membership in CII/ASSOCHEM or any other equivalent membership with Permanent/Regular Employees from Private Industries/Education Institutions with R & D facilities having at least three years’ experience are eligible.
  • Regular Staff of IIITDM Kurnool with at least 3 years of experience

Eligibility Criteria

The minimum educational qualifications for admission to the regular full-time scholars into the Ph.D. programme of the Institute are as follows:

PhD in Engineering

  1. Candidates with an M. Tech/M.S. (Research) degree in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record.
  2. Candidates who have qualified for the award of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with an exceptionally good academic record in an eligible discipline will be considered for direct admission to the Ph. D. Programme as a regular full-time scholar subject to the following conditions:
    • A B. Tech degree holder of an IIT with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0-point scale or with a valid GATE score.
    • A Bachelor’s degree holder in Engineering/Technology from any other University who is among the top 10 rank holders in the University and having a valid GATE score.
    • A Bachelor’s degree holder in Engineering/Technology from a reputed R&D organization and having a proven research record.

PhD in Sciences

  • Master’s degree in Sciences with a good academic record and having a valid score in GATE or UGC/CSIR-NET/NBHM or equivalent qualification in the relevant area / Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record / B. Tech degree holder of an IIT with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0-point scale with a valid GATE Score.

The Selection Committee may consider meritorious candidates from disciplines other than those listed in the Admission notification if there is a good match between the educational/research background of the candidate and the proposed area of research.

The admission notification will also include details about inter-disciplinary research areas, which may be pursued by the research scholars for the Ph. D. degree and the corresponding disciplines/specializations given by the Institute.

Additional criteria other than the minimum educational qualifications may be set by the Selection Committee from time to time for shortlisting candidates to be called for a test and/or interview.

Financial Assistance (HTRA)

The scholars admitted to the Ph.D. programmes under Full-time are eligible for the Half-time Teaching/Research Assistantship (HTRA) under the following regulations:

  • The scholars should work for at least 8 hours per week to earn this assistantship.
  • Renewal of assistantship every semester will be contingent on enrolment, satisfactory progress in research work and good performance during the preceding semester in the discharge of responsibility as teaching / research assistant.
  • Financial assistance is provided to selected scholars based on the prescribed rules of MoE.
    • 1st and 2nd Year (JRF): 37,000/-
    • 3rd – 5th Year (SRF): 42,000/-

For externally funded – Fellowship will be as per the norms of the respective external funding agency.

Application Process

  • Interested and eligible candidates shall submit application using online Admission to Ph.D. programme portal available on the Institute website (www.iiitk.ac.in).
  • Enclosures such as GATE score card, Educational and Experience certificates, online Fees payment receipt, No Objection Certificate (NOC) and sponsorship certificate in support of application are to be uploaded as separate documents (pdf), along with the application form.
  • In case, NOC is not enclosed at the time of online submission, a self declaration form should be upload by the candidate stating that NOC will be submitted at the time of interview. No Downloadable Forms will be available. After filling the form, you are advised to take a printout of your application and keep the same for your record.

Selection Procedure

  • Respective Departments will conduct the shortlisting and selection process.
  • Eligible candidates possessing the minimum educational qualifications and satisfying additional criteria set by the institute from time to time only will be called for the written test and/or Interview.
  • An entrance examination shall be conducted for all the applicants (Full-Time and Part-Time) who do not have GATE or NET qualification.
  • The syllabus for the written test and/ or Interview is GATE 2026 syllabus in respective subject.
  • Applicants with a valid GATE or CSIR/UGC-NET qualification will be directly eligible for the interview.
  • The question paper for written exam will consist of 50 MCQ based on the GATE/NET syllabus.
  • Each question will carry 2 marks, with a negative marking of 0.5 marks for every incorrect answer
  • The cut-off marks shall be determined in line with the GATE 2026 standards.
  • The exam will be conducted either in CBT (Moodle) mode or offline based on number of applications.
  • Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the written test and/or Interview test, the selection committee will finalize the applicants for admission to the Ph.D. programme.
