Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Surat invites application for PhD Admission 2026-27.

Admission Categories

• Regular Full time
  • With Institute fellowship or with project support,
  • With funding from outside agencies such as UGC, CSIR and industries,
  • Candidates sponsored under the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) of AICTE.
• External
  • The candidate must be a full-time regular employee of an Industry/Organization/ Institution having recognized R&D facilities and sponsored by the employer for pursuing Ph.D. at the Institute. The candidate must possess a minimum of two years of continuous regular service in the present organization after obtaining the qualifying degree as on the date of application. Experience gained in contractual/ad-hoc/temporary positions shall not be considered.
• Part time
  • The candidate must be a full-time regular employee of a reputed Institution/University /Organization located within a commutable distance from the Institute. The candidate must possess a minimum of two years of continuous regular service in the present organization after obtaining the qualifying degree as on the date of application. Experience gained in contractual/adhoc /temporary positions shall not be considered.
• Interdisciplinary
  • This category is intended for candidates possessing interdisciplinary expertise and relevant industry experience, whose proposed research demonstrates integration of technology with application domains and has the potential to contribute to industry-oriented and technology-driven research at the Institute. Importantly, the proposed research shall demonstrate integration of technology with the candidate’s domain expertise and align with the Institute’s research priorities. Experience gained in contractual/ad-hoc/temporary positions shall not be considered.

Note

• For admission under the regular category without fellowship and project category, the Departments will adopt common short-listing criteria and have a common merit list.
• A research scholar under the external category will normally carry out part or all his/ her research work in the industry/ organization/ national laboratory employing the scholar under the supervision of a co-guide employed in the same organization and a guide at IIIT-Surat.
• In general, external, part-time and Interdisciplinary scholars have a minimum residential requirement of one semester. Part- time and Interdisciplinary scholars will be permitted to do coursework without a residential requirement, with the permission of their employer.

Minimum Education Qualification

Ph.D. in Engineering

• ME/M.Tech/MS (by Research)/5- year Integrated Master’s/Dual Degree in relevant Engineering or Technology disciplines with a minimum CGPA of 6.0 or equivalent. Candidates with 2- year M.Sc. degree from IITs (through JAM) or BS-MS (5- year Integrated) from CFTIs with a minimum CGPA of 6.0 or equivalent may also apply, subject to departmentspecific requirements

Ph.D. in Mathematics and computational Sciences & Ph.D. in Physical and Applied Sciences

• ME/M.Tech/MS (by Research)/5- year Integrated Master’s/BS-MS (5-year Integrated) from CFTIs/2-year M.Sc. from IITs (through JAM) in relevant discipline with minimum CGPA 6.0 or equivalent.

OR

• Master’s degree from a recognised Indian University/Institute in a relevant subject
• Valid GATE/NET score/UGC/ CSIRNET JRF/ NBHM/INSPІRE PhD scholarship or equivalent qualification tenable for the year of admission.

Interdisciplinary

• Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology /Science/ Management (MBA/PGDM) /Economics/Social Sciences with minimum 60% marks or 6.0 CGPA equivalent on 10 Scale.
• Minimum 10 years of professional experience preferred in relevant Institutes/ Industries/ Research Laboratories/GoI departments.
• Candidates from non-technical backgrounds must additionally possess:
  • PG Diploma/ Certification in Data Science/AI/ Analytics/Computing, OR
  • Relevant technology-driven industry experience, OR
  • Publications/patents in related areas.

Selection Procedure

• Eligible candidates possessing the minimum educational qualifications and satisfying additional criteria set by the institute from time-to-time will be called for an Interview and written test by the Selection Committee of the institute.
• Candidates who have obtained PG degree 10 years earlier as on the last date for receipt of the completed application, has to appear for institute test.
• The applications of suitably qualified foreign nationals may be considered with an online interview.
• Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the interview and written test, the Institute Selection Committee will recommend to the Chairperson, Senate the names of candidates found suitable for admission to the Ph.D. Programme.

• Fill the Google form to upload the signed & scanned copy of your application along with necessary documents justifying your claims. All documents shall be self-attested before scanning. Scan the application along with other attested documents to get a single PDF file of size less than 10MB size.

• Last date of submission for online application (Extended): 20 September, 2026
• Intimation to shortlisted candidates for test or interview (website): Second week of September, 2026
• Date of written test and interview (offline mode): Third week of September, 2026
• Announcement of list of selected candidates for admission: Fourth week of September, 2026
