PhD Admission Categories
- Full-time with Institute Assistantship – Candidates applying for the Ph.D. programme under the Full-Time Institute assistantship category.
- Full-Time with own scholarship (CSIR/UGC NET-JRF, etc.) – Candidates applying for the Ph.D. programme under the Full-Time category with their own financial support (such as CSIR/UGC NET-JRF, etc).
- Full-time Sponsored – These scholars are employees of a Public Sector Undertaking, a Government Department, a Research & Development organization, or a recognised private industry of repute (approved by Senate on the recommendation of DPGC), or an Educational Institution, or be a Defence Sponsored Officer.
- Part-Time External Sponsored – These scholars are permanent/temporary employees of the institute OR who are working on various projects undertaken by the Institute OR the employees of a Public Sector Undertaking, a Government Department, a Research & Development organization, or a recognised private industry of repute (approved by Senate on the recommendation of DPGC), or an Educational Institution, or be a Defence Sponsored Officer.
- Part-Time IIIT Kota Project Staff – Candidates employed as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) under a research project funded to IIIT Kota are eligible to apply for the Ph.D. programme under the Part-Time category.
Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility conditions given below are the absolute minimum. Departments may prescribe any requirements over and above for short listing.
The “B.E./B.Tech./Equivalent and/or M.E./M.Tech./Equivalent should be in relevant discipline. The “minimum specified” CGPA/marks implies a minimum of 6.0 on the 10-point scale (60% marks only where CGPA is not awarded) for M.Tech. and Ph.D. with a relaxation for SC/ST implying minimum of 5.5 on the 10-point scale (55% marks only where CGPA is not awarded).
Reservation policy as prescribed by Government of India/MoE from time to time shall be applicable.
All eligibility requirements must be met by the date as prescribed in ‘Ordinance for PG Programmes (M.Tech. /Ph.D.), IIIT Kota’ under section 2.4 (5 & 6) as follows:
- The selected candidate, who has completed all the examinations including project/thesis examination and the viva voce before the date of registration but is unable to produce the certificate in proof of having passed and secured the minimum specified qualifying marks, may be considered for provisional admission. However, if admitted provisionally, they will be required to produce the evidence of their having passed (or at least appeared in) the qualifying degree examination by the last date of registration, failing which the admission may be cancelled.
- The aforesaid provisions shall not be applicable in the case of an M.Tech. student of this institute, who has been provisionally selected for admission to a Ph.D. programme. Such students will be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme subject to the condition that they must have successfully completed all the prescribed requirements including acceptance of their Thesis/Project in a particular semester by the last registration date as specified in the academic calendar.
Eligibility for PhD in Engineering
- The applicant must have a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with CGPA not below 6.0 on a 10-point scale or equivalent percentage marks. OR
- Exceptional candidates with Master’s in Electronics/Master of Computer Applications/Computer Science/Information Technology (or an associated area with strong background in mathematics, programming and research), or any other related subjects with minimum CGPA 7.0/70% marks. OR
- In exceptional cases brilliant candidates with minimum CGPA 8.0/ 80% marks in Bachelors degree in Engineering may be recommended by DPGC to the Senate Chairperson for admission in Ph.D program. Such candidates having sufficient experience in the relevant area and publications in refereed conferences/journals as notified by DPGC, may also be considered. Major deliberations shall be expected from various departments while admitting any student directly on the basis of B.Tech. only.
Minimum Qualifications
- Computer Science and Engineering
- B.Tech/M.Tech./ MCA/ M.Sc. in Computer Science and Engg./Computer Engg./ Software Engg./ Information Technology/ Information Security/ Communication and Computer Engg./Electronics and Communication Engg. or equivalent disciplines consistent with research areas of department.
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- B.Tech/ M.Tech./ M.Sc. in Electrical/ Electronics/ Computer/ Communication/ Telecommunication/ Instrumentation/ Control/Microelectronics or equivalent disciplines consistent with research areas of department
Admission of Sponsored Candidates
- A candidate who is sponsored for either Full-time (FT) or Part-time (PT) studies at IIIT Kota by his/her employer and who meets the additional conditions specified below may be admitted through the DPGC appointed as per the institute norms.
- A sponsored candidate must have total experience of more than one year, and must have been in service of the sponsoring organization for at least one year at the time of admission. The sponsoring organization must specifically undertake to relieve him/her to pursue the programme for its full duration. The sponsored candidates are required to submit No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer/organization stating that:
- His/Her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for M.Tech./PhD. Candidate should give undertaking that he would fulfill the attendance requirements of all the courses undertaken by him for fulfillment of the course pursued.
Financial Assistance
- The Institute may provide financial assistance to postgraduate students in the form of teaching or research assistantships (referred to as Institute Assistantship). Assistantships are awarded on a semester to semester basis for a period of up to ten semesters for Ph.D. students. The stipend for the assistantship is paid as per the institute norms. A student is expected to devote about eight hours per week towards the job(s) assigned to him/her by the department. The renewal of assistantship is contingent on the student’s satisfactory performance in the academic programme and in the satisfactory discharge of assistantship duties as assigned to him by the department.
- The emoluments as per latest MoE norms will be paid subject to approval by FC/BoG of IIIT Kota.
- The candidates applying for institute assistantship are required to submit the undertaking at the time of admission.

- Self-attested photocopies of the certificates/testimonials and all originals documents, PG dissertation/thesis copy should be brought along with the Application Form while coming for admission process. Two recent passport size photographs should be brought. Application Form either incompletely filled or without self-attested copies of the certificates/testimonials is liable to be rejected.
