Applications are invited from interested students by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in the areas of Physical, Chemical and Life Sciences.

All the selected candidates will register for Ph.D. in Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI, a deemed to be University of Department of Atomic Energy).

Selected candidates should be ready to carry out their PhD work at BARC, Mumbai and other BARC facilities at Kalpakkam, Indore, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Vizag.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates should have a consistently good academic record, and ONLY those candidates who have successfully cleared and possess a valid certificate for at least one of the following national-level examinations will be shortlisted for an interview at BARC, Mumbai. Applications will be scrutinized, and the suitability of candidates for the interview will be decided based on their academic performance and qualifying examination. The recommendation/decision of the Selection Committee will be final and binding.

Candidates should clearly indicate the details of the above qualifying examinations, and the certificate should be valid as of 01-08-2025. The candidate must submit proof at the time of the interview.

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates should have secured a minimum of 60% aggregate in B.Sc. and 55% aggregate in M.Sc. from a recognized University.
  • Candidates with a five-year integrated M.Sc./B.S-M.S. (Single degree) should have secured a minimum of 55% aggregate.
  • Candidates having a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed but are awaiting the final results of their M.Sc. Degree may also apply. However, such candidates must upload copies of the mark sheets of their B.Sc. Degree and a copy of their M.Sc. first-year mark sheet(s) along with the application. Such candidates should have scored at least 55% aggregate until the previous semester/year in M.Sc. and a minimum aggregate of 60% at the B.Sc. level. Candidates eventually joining the Fellowship should acquire aggregate marks of 55% in their M.Sc. qualifying degree; failure to do so will result in them not being allowed to continue in the programme.
  • Candidates who have completed but are awaiting the final results of a five-year integrated M.Sc./B.S-M.S. (Single degree) may also apply. Candidates should have secured a minimum of 55% aggregate up to the 8th semester. Candidates eventually joining the Fellowship should acquire aggregate marks of 55% in their five-year integrated M.Sc./B.S-M.S. (Single degree) qualifying degree; failure to do so will result in them not being allowed to continue in the programme.
  • Candidates who have completed but are awaiting the final results of a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) may also apply. Candidates should have secured a minimum of 75% aggregate up to the 6th semester/3rd year. Candidates eventually joining the Fellowship should acquire aggregate marks of 75% in their 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) qualifying degree; failure to do so will result in them not being allowed to continue in the programme.

All relevant certificates should be submitted at the time of joining the Centre. Wherever results are declared as CGPA/GPA, they may be converted to a percentage and entered. (The formula prescribed by the institute for conversion is to be indicated at the time of verification).

M.Sc. /Integrated M.Sc. / B.S. (4 years) is the eligible qualification with the following subjects

Physics or Chemistry or Biochemistry or Agriculture Chemistry or any other allied Chemistry must be one of the subjects at B.Sc. / five-year integrated M.Sc. level

*Candidates with M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / BS(4 years) with specializations in Electronics, and Instrumentation are NOT eligible to apply.

**Candidates with M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / BS(4 years) in Industrial Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Petroleum Chemistry, Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and M. Pharm. in Pharmaceutical Analysis are NOT eligible.

***Candidates with M.Sc. /Integrated M.Sc. / BS(4 years) in Fisheries, Horticulture, Forestry, Agronomy, Animal Husbandry, Bio-analytical Sciences, Polymer Science, Medicine/Medical Science, Pharmaceutical Science and Home Science are NOT eligible to apply. Candidates with B.Tech./M.Tech. degree in any of the Life Sciences disciplines are NOT eligible.

Age Limit

The candidate must be an Indian national.

The candidate should be less than 28 years of age as on last date for receipt of application.

Age relaxation is applicable up to 3 years in case of Other Backward Class Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) applicants, 5 years in case of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants and 10 years in case of persons with benchmark disabilities(PwBD) applicants.

Note : ONLY SSC/ MATRICULATION CERTIFICATE OR BIRTH CERTIFICATE WILL BE ACCEPTED AS PROOF OF DATE OF BIRTH, NO SUBSEQUENT REQUEST FOR CHANGE SHALL BE ENTERTAINED.

Selection Process

  • Applications will be scrutinized, and candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on their score obtained in the national qualifying exams and/or academic performance. Following this process, the number of candidates to be called for interview will be decided by the Selection Committee.
  • Final selection will be based on the performance of the candidate in the interview.
  • The recommendation/decision of the Selection Committee will be final and binding.

Travel Allowance

Candidates called for the interview will be reimbursed to and fro Third AC railway fare by the shortest route from the registered address (city) mentioned in their application to Mumbai, (subject to production of original tickets) as per rules. In case of candidates who travel by air, only the AC-III tier normal fare or actual fare, whichever is less, from the registered address (city) mentioned in their application to Mumbai, will be reimbursed on production of Air Ticket and Boarding pass.

Fellowship & Tenure

  • The selected candidates will be initially taken as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and will be paid a stipend of ₹37,000/- per month. The fellowship will be provided initially for a period of two years.
  • Continuation of the fellowship is subject to satisfactory performance and review at the end of each year. On satisfactory performance, the tenure of Fellowship will be further extended and upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year onwards with a stipend of ₹42,000/- per month (consolidated).
  • The total duration of this fellowship is five years.
  • They are entitled for contingency grant of ₹60,000/- per year including book allowance.

Accommodation

The selected candidates will be provided subsidized Hostel Accommodation and PhD programme being a residential programme, the stay in the provided hostel and payment of mess charges are mandatory. At stations where hostel accommodation is not provided, the candidates will be entitled for House rent Allowance (HRA) as per prevailing Government guidelines (Presently HRA is @ 30% of the Fellowship for city like Mumbai).
