About Program

The Ph.D. programme in mathematics is open to students having a Master’s degree in mathematics. The programme consists of a rigorous course work and projects during the first three semesters, followed by research work leading to a Ph.D. degree. The Degree is granted by the Homi Bhabha National Institute.

The Ph. D. Programme in mathematics at HRI consists of a rigorous course work and projects in the first two semesters, followed by research work leading to a Ph.D. degree. The students are taught basic as well as advanced courses in mathematics during this period. They also get to work on projects in which they normally continue to work towards their Ph. D. Degree. A thesis supervisor is assigned to a student once he/she passes the Oral General Comprehensive Examination (OGCE), which is conducted after successful completions of the course work.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Ph.D. programme at HRI, one must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Candidates must have one of the following degrees:
    • BS+ (4-years/8-semesters Bachelor’s degree in Science, including 1-year research)
    • M.Sc. / M.Tech. / M.Phil. or equivalent
  2. Candidates must meet the following grade criteria:
    • The qualifying degree must be from a recognized university/institute with at least 55% aggregate marks or an equivalent grade (as per the grading system).
    • For candidates with an equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution, guidelines issued by the appropriate statutory authority of India will apply.
    • In the case of a 4-year BS (Research) degree, a minimum of 75% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade) is required.

Admission Procedure

The admissions process includes a national-based written test followed by an interview:

  1. National-Based Written Test:
    • NBHM Window: Harish-Chandra Research Institute uses the national level NBHM Scholarship Written Test as a preliminary screening test for the selection. To apply for the HRI Mathematics Ph.D. programme, candidates must score above a cut-off point determined by the mathematics faculty. This is announced annually after the NBHM Test. The list of eligible candidates to apply for 2025-2026 admission is available here.
    • CSIR-UGC Window: Candidate who secures rank from 1 to 50, in the national level Joint CSIR-UGC NET Examination (subject: Mathematics) held in the last July (2024) / December (2023) month, are also eligible to apply for 2025-2026 admission of the HRI Mathematics Ph.D. programme.
  2. Interview:
    • The eligible applicants will be called for an online interview, conducted over Zoom. The tentative dates of the online interview can be found here.
  3. Selection:
    • Following the completion of the interviews, the final list of selected candidates will be made public on the HRI website by the end of April.
    • The selected candidates are expected to produce the hard copy of the relevant documents showing that they have the required eligibility, at the time of joining.
