Vacancy
The physics group at Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI) consists of five major subgroups:
- Astrophysics
- Condensed Matter Physics
- High Energy Physics
- String Theory
- Quantum Information and Computation (QIC)
Harish-Chandra Research Institute conducts Integrated Ph.D. programs in physics. The Integrated Ph.D. program is open to students with an Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.
Admissions to Integrated Ph.D. programs – 2025
Round-1
- Dates: June 9, 10, 11, 2025
- Online interview for shortlisted candidates.
Round-2
- Dates: July 21, 22, 23, 2025
- Online interview for shortlisted candidates.
Selection Process
- For I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs, candidates with rank up to 600 in GATE 2025 or JEST 2025 are eligible to apply. Those who are seeking admission to the Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level or at least 75% aggregate marks in the four year B.S. program. Students seeking admission to the I.Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.
- Students who have qualified the NET examinations held in July 2024 or March 2025 and have become eligible for a CSIR-UGC JRF fellowship in physics, with rank up to 600, are also eligible to apply. Students seeking admission to the Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level.
- The selection of students for the I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs will be done solely based on the performance in the interview. Shortlisting of candidates for the online interview will be based on application materials listed below.

- Copy of marksheet of GATE/JEST or NET examination.
- Copy of the latest marksheet/transcript indicating grades/CGPA/marks.
Candidates for I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. admissions should also mention their preference (round 1/round 2) in the email. Candidates not shortlisted for Round-1 interview will be automatically considered for Round-2. Candidates wishing to update their application material may do so by replying to the original application e-mail with additional information. Updates made after the application deadline will be considered for the next round.
Important Dates
- Round-1: Candidates must apply latest by June 2, 2025. List of shortlisted candidates for the online interview shall be announced on the HRI website by June 6, 2025.
- Round-2: Candidates must apply latest by July 14, 2025. List of shortlisted candidates for the online interview shall be announced on the HRI website by July 18, 2025.
