Eligibility Criteria

Admission to the Ph.D. Programmes for the May 2025 session is open to the following candidates –

  • (I) Candidates who qualify for the fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/ GATE/CEED and similar National level tests or any other test notified by the UGC from time to time, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme based on an interview.
  • (II) Candidates not falling under (I) above but have qualified NET/SET Lectureship shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme based on an interview. There shall be 70% weightage for the score at the NET/SET and 30% weightage for the Interview.
  • (III) Candidates not falling under (I and II) above but have answered the Entrance Test conducted at the University and those qualifying this test shall be eligible to attend the interview. There shall be 70% weightage for the score at Entrance Test and 30% weightage for the Interview.

Candidates who have completed M. Phil Degree by distance mode are not eligible.

All the candidates who are qualified in the Goa University Ph.D. Entrance Test (GU-PET) conducted by this University held in the session of August 2023 and August 2024, are eligible.

Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified but exempted from appearing at the Ph.D. Entrance Test, are eligible.

Reuirements

  • Qualification
    • A candidate who has obtained a 1-year/2-Semester Master’s Degree Programme after a 4-year/8-Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme or a 2-year/4-Semester Master’s Degree Programme after a 3-year Bachelor’s Degree Programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by the corresponding statute or regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or an equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution. or
    • A candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8 Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme (Under NEP) should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. or
    • Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. Programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade shall be given for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer [NCL])/Person with Disability (PwD), Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
  • The subject of research shall be that which relates to the main branch/branches of knowledge chosen by the candidate for the Post-Graduate Degree. However, a candidate wishing to conduct research in a subject of an inter-disciplinary character shall also be eligible for registration. The applications of such candidates shall be considered by following the procedure set out under regulations.
  • PhD through Part-time Mode
    • Ph.D. Programmes through part-time mode shall be permitted, provided all the conditions stipulated below are fulfilled. A candidate who is employed with any organization has to obtain a NOC from the appropriate authority in the organization where the candidate is employed “No Objection Certificate”, clearly stating that: (a) The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis. (b) Her/his official duties permit her/him to devote sufficient time to research. (c) If required, s/he will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.

  • Documents to be uploaded at the time of submitting the online application –
    • Statement of Marks of Post-Graduation
    • Certificate of Passing M.Phil. CSIR-UGC/UGC-NET-JRF/lectureship, DBT-JRF/SLET/JEST/ICAR-NET/NET/SET/GATE/GPAT/GU-PET, and other examinations approved by UGC guidelines.
    • For candidates applying under Reserved Categories, a valid certificate issued by an Officer of the rank of Deputy Collector or any other authorized Officer as notified by the Government of Goa is required.
    • A Valid Category Certificate (if applicable); for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates, the certificate is valid for 3 years.
    • EWS Category candidates need to submit a certificate issued by an Officer of the rank of Mamlatdar or any other Authorized Officer as notified by the Government of Goa.
  • Applicants are eligible to apply for a maximum three Programmes.
  • Candidates are required to check/confirm the correctness of the information entered before paying and submitting their application. Application fees once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.

Selection Process

  1. Candidates who qualify for a fellowship or scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED/GPET and similar National level tests, or any other test notified by the UGC from time to time, will be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme based solely on an interview.
  2. Candidates who do not fall under criteria (1) above but have qualified NET/SET/GUPET score/GATE/CEED/GPET Lectureship will be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme based on an interview. For these candidates, there will be a 70% weightage for the score at the NET/SET/GU-PET and a 30% weightage for the Interview. * Note: For instance, if a student scores 120 marks in an entrance test out of 200 marks and 50 marks in an interview out of 100 marks, as per the above criteria the final marks out of 100 will be: (120/200×0.7)+(50/100×0.3)=57 marks.
  3. Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified but exempt from appearing at the Ph.D. Entrance Test will be eligible for admission based on an interview.
  4. When grading candidates for admission to the Ph.D. Programme, the following will be considered:
    • Basic knowledge of the chosen field of study.
    • Competence for the proposed research.
  5. Candidates selected for admission to the Ph.D. Programme will be placed under “Category A”. Candidates not selected for admission will be placed under “Category B”.
  6. The Selection Committee may provide a list of additional candidates as waitlisted candidates against a recognized Research Supervisor, along with the reservation category. These candidates will be listed under Category “C” and this list will be valid only for the current round of admission.
  7. In case of a tie in scores, preference will be given in the following order: JRF awardees in CSIR-UGC/UGC NET/ GATE/CEED examination, followed by DST Inspire, M.Phil degree holders, NET, SET candidate, and GPAT over GU-PET qualified candidates. If a tie still persists, interview performance will be used as a tiebreaker.
  8. Every candidate will be required to reside within the territorial jurisdiction of Goa University during the first three years of the research period leading to the Ph.D. Degree.
