Eligibility Criteria

  • A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8- semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
  • In exceptional cases, the applicants with a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree having a minimum of 8 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or 75% marks in aggregate and having proven research capability may also be considered eligible.
  • Candidates who have completed the M. Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the PhD programme.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.

Selection Process

  • The Research Scholars shall be admitted in a two-stage process – University PhD Entrance Test/ UGC-CSIR NET/ GATE/GPAT etc. and an Interview. The admission into the PhD programme shall be based either on Entrance Test conducted by DCRUST or the National Eligibility Test (NET) score earned by the candidates in the UGC-CSIR NET (Category I, II & III) meant for admission into PhD programme.
  • The applicants will have to take the University Ph.D. Entrance Test and those further shortlisted will be required to appear for interview/vivavoce/presentation. However, candidates who are successful in the eligibility test conducted at national level by UGC/ CSIR/DBT/ ICMR/ICSSR for the award of JRF within the permitted validity period of these awards or have a valid score in GATE / NET/ CEED and similar National level tests are exempted from the Entrance Test. However, candidates covered under the exempted categories may also appear in the entrance test, if they so desire, to improve their weightage.
  • Candidates who are exempted from the Entrance Test may also approach the respective Departments or Centres round the year to apply for admission to Ph.D. programme except during the period of process of Ph.D. admission (from the date of initiation of obtaining the Ph.D. Slots to the date of final admission).The respective DRC/CRC will verify the eligibility followed by presentation by the applicant and the interview for making a decision regarding admission of the candidates. If selected, the applicants will be admitted to the research programme. They will have to register for Pre-Ph.D. course in the same or subsequent semester(s) also. These filled Ph.D. slots are considered as integral part of Ph.D. seat matrix for next Ph.D. admission.
  • A relaxation of 5 % marks will be allowed in the entrance examination for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/differently-abled category, Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time in the entrance examination conducted by the University. Minimum qualifying marks do not guarantee admission. Final admission shall be made on the basis of criterion prescribed in brochure.
  • The Entrance Test syllabus shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific. The Entrance Test shall be a Single Paper Test having 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and duration of test shall be 120 Minutes. The candidates shall be required to answer all questions. There will be no negative marking for wrong answers. The Entrance Test shall be divided in two parts.
    • (a) Part ‘A’ Research methodology Part-A shall consist of 50 MCQs each carrying one mark. The questions which will be of general nature, intended to assess the teaching / research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidates.
    • (b) Part ‘B’ This part shall contain 50 subjects specific MCQs covering the topics given in the syllabus and are designed to test a candidate’s knowledge of the subject in which he/she has applied for Ph.D. admission.
  • The successful applicants, i.e. eligible applicants, who have secured 50 % marks in the University PhD entrance test are eligible to be called for the interview, or otherwise exempted under Clause 3.4 shall be judged by the Department Research Committee (DRC) through interview/viva-voce/presentation. A department document verification committee will verify the eligibility conditions and other required documents with originals before allowing him/her to appear for an interview. The list of candidates eligible for interview will be declared and any complaint by the candidate regarding his/her eligibility will be dealt with by the concerned department’s chairperson. Marks of entrance test will not be disclosed till the interview committee awards the marks for interview. The successful applicants, i.e. eligible applicants, who qualify the University PhD entrance test/NET/Valid GATE score or otherwise exempted under Clause shall appear before the PhD Interview Committee through interview/vivavoce/presentation.
