About Bose Institute Kolkata

Bose Institute established in 1917 by Acharya J.C. Bose, the founder of modern science in the Indian subcontinent,. The Institute was set up as Asia’s first interdisciplinary research center and bears a century-old tradition of excellence in research.

Bose Institute has an established Ph.D. programme in the research domains of Atmospheric Sciences, Interdisciplinary Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.

Many of alumni of the institute have become reputed experts in their chosen fields of research.

The institute is a national pioneer in research on astroparticle physics and cosmic rays, foundations of quantum physics and interdisciplinary physics. Path-breaking research in the fields of plant sciences, structural biology, molecular biology, biomedical sciences and biotechnology has been conducted at the Institute.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in any of the following fields: Engineering/ Science/ Technology/ Medical with at least 55% of marks for general candidates, while 50% marks is necessary for SC/ST/OBC (noncreamy layer)/ Differently Abled Persons and other categories of candidates, as per UGC norms. Candidates in the final year of their master’s degree program who have also qualified in a national-level test, as mentioned above, are also eligible to apply. However, if selected, they must submit their final mark sheet or degree certificate at the time of joining.
  • Award of a Junior Research Fellowship after qualifying in a national-level test [CSIR-UGC NET (Category-1), DBT-JRF, DBT-BINC-JRF, ICMR-NET, DST-INSPIRE, or equivalent] and with a validity date not earlier than 31st July 2026. Fellowship must be valid for the full tenure.
  • Candidates possessing a DST INSPIRE Fellowship must also have qualified in an appropriate national level eligibility examination like GATE, JEST, NET (Category-2 or Category-3) or equivalent at the time of application.
  • Candidates possessing a DST INSPIRE Fellowship must also have qualified in an appropriate national level eligibility examination like GATE, JEST, NET LS/Assistant Professor/admission to Ph.D. or equivalent at the time of application, for being considered in the Ph.D. Programme in Bose Institute.
  • Candidates who have qualified in GATE, JEST (Ph.D.), ICAR’s AICE-JRF (Ph.D.), NET (Category‑2 or Category‑3), or any other national‑level examination, are eligible to apply even if they do not hold a valid JRF or a fellowship that can be activated through Bose Institute. However, their examination scores must remain valid at least until 31st July 2026. A limited number of fellowships offered by Bose Institute are available and will be awarded based on merit and performance during the interview.

Below 28 years as on closing date of online application (relaxation of age is applicable as per Government of India rules).

Fellowship

Admissible as per Govt. of India rules as provided by UGC/ CSIR/ DBT/DST/ICMR or Bose Institute. As per present DST norms, these amounts are Rs. 37000 + HRA (as applicable) for JRF, and Rs. 42000 + HRA (as applicable) for SRF.

Selection Procedure

  • Names of the shortlisted candidates, along with the date and time of interview will be displayed on the Institute website
  • It should be noted that mere appearance on the shortlist does not imply admission.
  • The candidate needs to appear in-person for the interview.
  • The Institute reserves the right to restrict the number of candidates called for the interview to a reasonable limit based on qualifications.
  • The selection process will assess the candidate’s knowledge in core areas as well as the suitability of the candidate for conducting scientific research at Bose Institute.
  • No TA/DA will be allowed for appearing for the interview.
  • The final list of selected candidates will be displayed on the Institute’s website. Selected candidates will be informed of their assigned laboratory via registered email.

  • Applicants may save the properly filled application form in PDF format before submitting.
  • Following the successful submission of the online application form, an acknowledgement receipt will be generated and sent to the candidate’s email ID as provided in the application form. Candidates should retain this receipt for future reference. If called for the interview, candidates must produce this acknowledgement receipt. No candidate will be allowed to appear for the interview without this receipt.
