Eligibility
- Candidates who have completed a 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
- Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
- Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
Those clearing in UGC-NET (Subject as mentioned below) in any of three categories are eligible to apply for the admission to Ph.D. programmes:
- Category-1: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
- Catcgory-2: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
- Catcgory-3: Eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only and not for the award of JRF or appointment as Assistant Professor
For admission to Ph.D. in Population Studies at IIPS-Mumbai, clearing in UGC-NET in the subject of Population Studies is the mandatory eligibility requirement.
Candidates who have already passed the qualifying examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, admission of the candidate will be cancelled if she/he fails to furnish the final examination results by September 30, 2026.
The upper age limit is 30 years as on June 30, 2026. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD categories as per Government of India rules.
Selection Criteria
- Eligible for UGC- JRF fellowship only: For those students who are having a valid JRF, the selection will be done based on the personal interview only. The personal interview component carries 100% weightage. The Institute will not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the personal interview.
- Eligible for GOI fellowship only: For those students with category 2 and category 3 of UGC-NET, 70% weightage is given to their NET score and 30% weightage is to their performance in the personal interview. The Ph.D. Admission will be based on the combined merit of NET score & the scores obtained in the personal Interview. The Institute will not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the personal interview. The candidate must possess a valid UGC–NET score as on the last date for submitting the application for the Ph.D. admission. Those students who have cleared only NET prior to 2025 are not eligible to apply for any of the Ph.D. programmes.
Fellowships
Government of India Fellowships @ Rs. 37,000/-per month for 1st and 2nd years and Rs. 42,000/- per month for 3rd and 4th years available for the Indian students who have qualified UGC-NET in Population Studies conducted by the UGC. Such Ph.D. fellowship also carries a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per year for the first two years and Rs. 20,500/- for the third year and fourth year.
