Raman Research Institute (RRI) Bangalore offers PhD Program in various research areas.

Students at RRI are registered for their PhD degree with Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. RRI is also a participant in the Joint Astronomy Programme (JAP) with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

• Towards multi-node quantum repeater networks using quantum memories and entanglement distribution
• Secure quantum communications
• Quantum Computing with ultra-cold Rydberg atoms
• Quantum Sensing with Rydberg atoms
• Advanced phase-matching techniques for the generation of attosecond pulse trains/isolated attosecond pulses
• High harmonic spectroscopy of laser-produced plasmas.
• Non-local quantum correlations for advanced optical metrology.

Theoretical Physics

• Non-Equilibrium Dynamics
• Statistical Physics and Condensed Matter
• Quantum dynamics, collective quantum phenomena

Soft Condensed Matter

• Single Molecule Biophysics

Student Requirement (Tentative)

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates seeking admission in PhD programme must necessarily have the following Qualification(s):

• One year/2-semester Master’s degree in Physics / Mathematics / Astronomy / Optics / Photonics / Biophysics after a 4-year/ 8-semester Bachelor’s degree programme with atleast 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade. OR
• Two year/4-semester Master’s degree in Physics / Mathematics / Astronomy / Optics / Photonics / Biophysics after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree programme or equivalent qualifications with atleast 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade. OR
• 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering with 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. OR
• M.Phil in Physics/Mathematics degree with atleast 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. OR
• A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade is allowed to reserved candidates.
• Students who expect to complete their final degree in the academic year 2025-2026 may also apply, provided they can produce their final scorecard at the time of admission.
• Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates will be as per Institute norms.

Scholarships

• Students will be paid a scholarship of Rs. 37,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs.42,000/- per month thereafter for the next three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
• In addition, they are paid a book grant totaling to Rs.50,000/- in five years.
• Hostel accommodation, if available, or HRA at applicable rate, will be provided.
• The scholarship will be provided for a period of five years.
• RRI encourages and supports participation of students in national and international conferences.

Selection Procedure

Candidates seeking admission are called for interview based on:

• Performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-PHYSICS) with a valid score. OR
• Performance in any of the following National Level Tests with a valid score:
  • CSIR-UGC NET (Physics)
  • GATE (Physics)

The final selection of all the candidates is based on performance in the interviews to be held at RRI tentatively during May – June 2026. Call letters for the interviews will be sent around the first week of May 2026 by e-mail. Outstation candidates will be paid a round trip sleeper class train fare as TA reimbursement on their visit to RRI for Interviews.
