University of Calicut invites applications from eligible candidates including those exempted from entrance test, for admission to various streams of Ph.D programme in full-time and part-time mode for 2025.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A 1-year/2-semester masters degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelors degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester masters degree programme after a 3-year bachelors degree programme or qualifications recognised as masters degree by the University of Calicut, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognised or authorised by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belong to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/ Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time. The eligibility of the program should be recommended by the Research Advisory Committee of the concerned Research Centre.
  • Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme (before 2023) with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognised or authorised by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non- creamy layer)/ Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.

For Part Time PhD

  • Registration may be granted to all resident scholars on full time basis and to regular/permanently employed persons on part-time basis.
  • The Teachers/ academicians/ scientists of the Central/State funded/Grant in Aid institutions in India/ Librarians working in Government/ aided colleges/ employees of the University of Calicut, holding a permanent position there, if they qualify other eligibility criteria, are eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme satisfying the conditions of Clause 2.1 of the Calicut University Research Regulation 2023, may be granted part-time registration.
  • The Principals and teachers of Self-financing Colleges/ Contract/ Guest Lecturers working in Govt./ Aided Colleges/ University Teaching Departments/ School of Distance Education of the University/ Centres run by the University, having at least 12 months of experience and still continuing in service may be granted part-time Ph.D. registration. The required experience should be completed as on the date of this notification. They have to qualify in the entrance examination for admission to Ph.D. programme. An undertaking from the Principal of the College/ Head of the Department/ Director should be submitted along with the application for part-time research that the Assistant Professor is still in service. In the case of the Principal, the certificate should be from the appointing authority. The candidates are eligible for admission to PhD programme satisfying the conditions of Clause 2.1 of Calicut University Research Regulation 2023.
  • Indian and Foreign personnel working as Scientists/ Teaching Faculty/ Research Fellows, working in Educational Institutions or Research Development Organisations outside India, may be granted parttime Ph.D. registration satisfying the conditions of clause 2.3.4 of Calicut University Research Regulations 2023.
  • Project Fellows may be granted part-time Ph.D. registration satisfying the conditions of clause 2.3.5 of Calicut University Research Regulations 2023.
  • Professionals permanently employed in R & D environments in scientific institutions or industries can apply for part time research if they satisfy the conditions of the Clause for eligibility to do Ph.D and clause 2.3.7 of Calicut University Research Regulations 2023. Such candidates need to qualify the Ph.D. Entrance Examination conducted by the University of Calicut.
  • . The candidate for a part- time Ph.D. Programme should submit a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the appropriate authority in the organisation where the candidate is employed, clearly stating that:
    • The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
    • His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research.
    • If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.

Selection Process

Candidates eligible for registration to Ph.D shall be decided by a two stage process – Entrance Test and Interview/Viva-Voce.

As per the UGC Public Notice No.F.4-1(UGC-NET Review Committee)/2024(NET)/140648 dated 27.03.2024 & University Order No.19164/2024/Admn dated 27.12.2024, from June 2024 onwards, the NET candidates will be declared eligible in three categories as mentioned below.

  • Category-1: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
  • Category-2: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
  • Category-3: Eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only and not for the award of JRF or appointment as Assistant Professor.

For candidates qualified under category 1 (JRF-qualified), the admission will be solely based on an interview conducted by the Department Research Committee of the subject concerned and as per the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.

For students who qualify in Categories 2 and 3, 70% weightage will be given for test score and 30% weightage for the interview for admission to Ph.D. programmes. The Ph.D. admission will be based on the combined merit of NET marks and the marks obtained in the interview/ viva voce.

The marks obtained in the NET by the candidate in Categories 2 and 3 will be valid for a period of one year for admission to Ph.D.

Entrance Test

  • Candidates for Ph.D. programme shall be granted registration through an entrance test conducted by the University. Provided that a weightage of 70% for the entrance test and 30% for the performance for the interview/viva-voce shall be given.
  • All the candidates getting a minimum of 50% marks and in the case of SC/ST categories of candidates a minimum of 40% marks and in the case of SEBC (non- creamy layer) / differently abled and other categories of candidates a minimum of 45% marks, as the case may be, in the entrance test are qualified to appear for the interview.
  • Syllabus of the Entrance test shall consist of questions based on research methodology and the subject of study concerned.
  • There will not be revaluation of the answer scripts, but provision to avail photocopies, if applied for the same in 10 days of the publication of the Short Lists, by remitting the fee fixed by Pareeksha Bhavan.

Exemption From Entrance Test

  • Candidates who have qualified UGC-JRF/UGC CSIR-JRF and research fellowships of Central and State Government departments/agencies as approved by the University, as the case may be.
  • Full time regular teachers of the University departments/ Govt. or Aided Colleges/ Directorate of Collegiate Education/and teachers with FDP/ QIP or similar fellowships.
  • Scientists with at least five years experience working in State/Central aided research institutions.
  • Foreign nationals who are otherwise eligible for admission.
  • Candidates who join as Ph.D Scholars in the Joint Degree Programme with a foreign university.
  • Full time project fellows, who have been selected on the basis of a written test and interview, working in a research project under the investigation of research guide of the University.
  • Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET, UGC CSIR-NET, UGC NET (eligible for PhD admission category, 2024 onwards), UGC CSIR-NET (eligible for PhD admission category, 2024 onwards).
  • The candidates mentioned in clause 3.2.1 to 3.2.6 can apply for Ph.D. registration anytime during the academic year depending on the willingness / availability of guides. All other candidates who are permitted to do research should qualify the Ph.D. entrance examination conducted by the University of Calicut.
  • In the case of anytime candidates, except foreigners, the notification should be issued on the website of the University/website of the College or Institute. The modalities to be followed for admission of anytime candidates will be as per the rules laid down by the University from time to time.

Application Process

Candidates applying for Ph.D admission 2025 shall visit the University admission website: admission.uoc.ac.in and access the Ph.D 2025 registration page and complete the registration in the following two steps:

  • First Step – CAP ID Creation :
    • Candidate applying for Ph.D 2025 shall initially create a CAP ID by providing the mobile number in the “REGISTER” link in Ph.D 2025 registration page. After successful verification of the mobile number via OTP, a CAP ID and Password (Security Key) will be sent to the registered mobile number (Mobile number of students/ parents/ guardian shall only be furnished).
  • Second Step – Application Completion and Payment:
    • With the CAP ID and Password (Security Key) received in the registered mobile number, the candidate can login and fill up the application page by providing required data. Candidates shall take utmost care while selecting the reservation category during the filling up of the online application. For completing the application, candidate shall click on the “Final Submit & Pay” button and make payment. Print out of the application will be available, only if the payment is successful.

The hard copy of the application printout shall not be submitted to the University . Instead, the candidates have to produce the same at the departments/research centres, at the time of admission.
