Tata Institute of Social Sciences invites application for PhD Admission 2025-26.

Admission Mode

Ph.D. Programmes are offered in Regular Full-time mode. The Ph.D. programme in TISS mandate successful completion of coursework, regular presentations before the Research Advisory Committees, the evaluation and assessment of coursework and thesis.

The full-time Ph.D. students are not working professional and devote their full time to the Ph.D. research. They are mostly fellowship/scholarship holders and are required to put their attendance on daily basis in the Attendance Register maintained in the Doctoral Students’ Office (DSO) of the Institute. Full-time Ph.D. students are also required to attend the course work classes, research seminars, talks arranged on regular basis by their schools and the DSO. Whenever, the full-time Ph.D. students get a job, they can request the DSO for converting their Ph.D. into part-time Ph.D.

Eligibility

• TISS follows all the guidelines and norms issued by the University Grants Commission from time to time in regulating the Ph.D. programmes such as “University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.
• Candidates who have completed: A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed. OR
• Equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
• A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.
• Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.

• Online Personal Interview (OPI): 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20 and 21 January, 2026
• Announcement of provisional list of selected candidates: Before 27 January, 2026
• Confirmation of admission by the selected candidates: Before 30 January, 2026
• Document verification of candidates who have confirmed the admission: 2 February, 2026 and 3 February, 2026
• Orientation to the newly joined students: 4 February, 2026
• Commencement of the classes for Ph.D. Coursework: 5 February, 2026
