Admission Categories

  • Full Time
    • Research scholar in this category will have to work on Full-time basis to pursue their PhD. They will be eligible to receive assistantship / scholarship from the University, or any other recognized funding agency as per the rules.
  • Sponsored
    • A research scholar in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization, research laboratory or industry to pursue Ph.D. in the University on a full-time basis. Such students will be required to submit a Sponsorship Certificate from their respective organization along with their GPF / CPF / NPS contribution proof.
    • The University shall not provide any assistantship/scholarship to such research scholars and all the applicable University fees and expenditure for pursuing research work shall be remitted by the sponsoring organization to the University. Research scholars under this scheme shall be treated as full-time students.
  • Part-time
    • A candidate working at a research center recognized by the University, regular / contractual faculty members of this University / employees working in Govt. / Govt. aided / Private Engineering Colleges / Universities / Industries / Public sector organizations shall be considered for the admission under this category if their Organization is situated within 100 km distance from HBTU Kanpur. All such candidates have to submit “No-Objection Certificate” from their employers at the time of interview. The requirement of 100 KM distance may be relaxed if appropriate authority of the candidate’s organization provides “No-Objection Certificate” explicitly stating that:
      • The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
      • His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research.
      • If required, he/she will be relieved from his/her duty to complete the course work.
    • Eligible faculty / staff members of the University shall be treated as Part-time students.
  • Quality Improvement Program (QIP)
    • QIP provides opportunities to faculty members of the degree awarding Engineering Institutions to improve their qualifications by admitting them to Ph.D. programs as per the rules prescribed in the QIP scheme of MHRD, Govt. of India. Research Scholars under this scheme shall be treated as full time students.

  • School of Engineering
    • M.Tech. / M. E. Degree in relevant discipline with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent CGPA/ CPI. or
    • B.E. / B. Tech. degree with a minimum of 70% marks or equivalent CGPA/CPI along with at least 10 years of professional experience in relevant field. or
    • B.E. / B. Tech. degree in relevant discipline with a minimum of 75% marks or equivalent CGPA/CPI. or
    • B.C.A degree with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent CGPA/CPI for MCA Stream (Eligible for pursuing Ph.D. in CSE Department)
  • School of Chemical Technology
    • M. Tech. / M. E. degree in relevant discipline with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent CGPA / CPI. Or
    • B.E. / B. Tech. degree with a minimum of 70% marks or equivalent CGPA/CPI along with at least 10 years of professional experience in relevant field. or
    • B.E. / B. Tech. degree in relevant discipline with a minimum of 75% marks or equivalent CGPA/CPI. Or
    • M. Sc. degree with minimum 55% marks in Chemistry / Industrial Chemistry / Applied Chemistry / Biotechnology or equivalent CGPA / CPI.

Note:

  • A relaxation of 5% in minimum qualifying marks (without grace marks) is permissible to candidates belonging to SC / ST / OBC-NCL / Differently-abled, EWS, and other categories as notified by UGC from time to time.
  • A University Fellowship of Rs. 15,000/- per month for a maximum of three years will be granted to all full-time regular Ph.D. students.
  • *All seats mentioned in the seat matrix are for the Full-Time Ph.D. programme; part-time admissions do not have a fixed seat limit and shall be permitted solely based on the availability of seats under eligible faculty supervisors (maximum: 4 under an Assistant Professor, 6 under an Associate Professor, and 8 under a Professor).

Selection Process

  • The Written Examination / Interview and Document Verification for Ph.D. admissions will be conducted at HBTU Kanpur. A separate notification regarding the schedule will be displayed on the University website.
  • Candidates must qualify in the Written Examination comprising Paper I and Paper II.
    • Paper I will assess research aptitude, data interpretation, language proficiency, reasoning, and analytical ability.
    • Paper II will be subject-specific.
  • Both papers will consist of multiple-choice questions. A candidate must obtain an aggregate of 50% marks or more in both papers combined to be called for the interview. The weightage of the Written Examination and Interview shall be 70% and 30%, respectively.
  • Candidates with valid UGC-NET (Category-1/2/3) / CSIR-NET / GATE / CEED or similar national-level qualifications in the relevant discipline are exempted from the Written Examination but must appear for the Interview.

  • All eligible Indian nationals may apply. There is no upper age limit for admission to the Ph.D. programmes.
