Admission Category
The Institute admits Ph.D. candidates under the following categories:
- Full-time (Regular)
- Part-time Scholar
Full-time (Regular) Ph.D. Programme
A student in this category works full-time for his/her Ph.D. degree. Under this category, admissions can be offered in one of the following sub-categories:
Sponsored Candidate (SP)
- Persons who possess the minimum prescribed qualifications and are in service in any of the following establishments with Minimum basic qualification shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D program as sponsored candidates. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute under this category
Self-Financed Candidate (SF)
- Any candidate fulfilling the eligibility criteria for Ph.D. admissions can apply as a Self-Financed candidate.
- No financial Assistance provided, However Teaching Assistantship Rs. 12,000 PM may be provided subject to availability of funds and requirements of Departments.
Fellowship Awardee (FA)
- Regular With Institute Assistantship: – Eligible candidates may get Institute Assistantship* – 25,000 + HRA (If the Hostel Accommodation is not provided in the Campus) (Subject to Approval) * Subject to availability of funds and requirements of departments (1 HSS)
- candidates may apply for the Individual Fellowship category from the respective funding agency (i.e. CSIR/UGC/ DST/DBT/ ICMR etc., Candidates admitted under Individual Fellowship category shall not be entitled for Institute Research Assistantship.
Research Assistantship through Project (RAP)
- Research fellow appointed in the sanctioned projects from various Government agencies, can apply to Ph. D. program of the Institute after following the due procedure under this category.
Part-Time Ph.D. Programme
Students under this category are professionally employed persons, including the staff of IITRAM and faculty members of other institutes, who pursue the Ph.D. programme while continuing the duties of his/her services in the parent organization.
Under this category, admissions can be offered in one of the following sub-categories:
- University / Institutes / College Teacher
- Institute Staff of IITRAM (IS)
- External working in an organization/ industry with R&D facility
Eligibility Criteria
Engineering/Technology:
- A Master’s degree in a relevant subject of Engineering/Technology with First Class* (55%** marks for SC/ST) and a Bachelor’s degree in relevant subjects of Engineering / Technology with First Class* (55%** marks for SC/ST) OR
- B.Tech. with high CPI
Basic Sciences:
- Master’s degree in relevant subjects of Science / Engineering with First class* (55%** marks for SC/ST) and Bachelor’s degree in relevant subjects of Science /Engineering with First class* (55%** marks for SC/ST).
Humanities and Social Sciences:
- M.A. or equivalent degree in Humanities and Social Sciences subjects with 55% marks for the general category (50% for SC/ST) OR
- Master’s degree in Commerce with 55% marks for the general category (50% for SC/ST) OR
- M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Science, with First Class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) OR
- Candidate with two years of PGDM from recognized institutions will be considered for the research areas consistent with their academic background.
Selection Process
Eligible candidates are called for a written test and interview. The cutoff marks in the written test for interview are as mentioned below:
- For Open category Candidates – 50%
- For SC/ST Candidates – 40%
However, the individual fellowship category, i.e. UGC-NET (including JRF) / UGC – CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE etc., may be considered exempted from the written test based on the recommendation of the Department Committee.
Entrance Test
The syllabus of the written test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% subject specific. The Entrance Test shall be conducted at IITRAM. The Screen and Shortlisting Committee will shortlist the candidates for the written test. Merely satisfying the eligibility criteria does not guarantee being called for written test /interview.

Interview
- The candidates shortlisted for the Interview are required to give a brief presentation on any topic of their research interest.
- No TA / DA shall be given to the candidates attending the written test.
Financial Assistance
- The Institute offers financial assistance to eligible Ph.D. (Full-Time) students in various forms, i.e., Institute Assistantship, Teaching Assistantship.
- Students under the Part-Time category are not eligible to avail financial assistance from the Institute.

- Incomplete applications will be rejected.
